Surrendering Self to Truth

This is a follow up in some way to the sola scriptura thread now closed.
The following expresses not only my own personal testimony, but how I believe Sola scriptura ought to be exercised.

• To develop a healthy scepticism toward our own beliefs and values.
• Trust the scriptures more than any of our current understanding of any doctrine or teaching
• To determine to live more truthfully in accordance to the scriptures.

It was because of my willingness to approach God with a heart that completely distrusted self... That was sceptical of what I had been taught in the past regarding faith and practice... That was determined to accept truth as revealed in the scriptures regardless of what was popularly taught in the churches that has led me to where I am today. I believe that only as we have such a like attitude of self doubt and faith toward God that we can avoid error and expose deception.

It is understandable sir, many are skeptical by nature, for good reason I might add, as there are many deceivers in the world. One should be most cautious when their life might depend on advice from others. It is also proper according to scripture as well, perhaps you have read the account of the Beroeans found at Acts 17:11, they were skeptical as well, sure you and I know Paul was one of God's people, but even then caution may play in, so what did they do? They knew very well that Jesus sent disciples to preach the good news, so they accepted Pauls words eagerly, however they rightly compared them to what the Bible teaches, to see whether those things came from God or from the other god.

You act very wisely to be cautious especially concerning information posted on the internet, accepting it eagerly is appropriate, but making sure of those words' accuracy is even more important as your life results in obedience to Jehovah's words sir.

Study and read, study and read... but don't leave out talking to God regularly, surrendering to Him and asking for His help to come to the understanding needed of the whole thing... the whole of the scriptures we have consumed.

I believe that all the information needed for us to go on with God is in the written scriptures, but the getting it out does not come by Bible study alone, does it? I tried to go that way for years and was at one time able to quote a whole bunch of scripture... and then I backslid for 10 years. I stopped reading my Bible and threw away a whole stack of paper notebooks full of handwritten Bible related notes. That began before the time when most everyone, [in the USA & a few other countries] had computers at home and cell phones in the hand.

When the 10 years was ended then came the time for me to learn something about really surrendering, a type of surrender which I had engaged in only slightly prior to that had scarcely understood all.

Prior to backsliding I had thought that if I only studied the Bible enough I would or could one day become like Enoch, who pleased God and was translated perhaps earlier than what we might think was the end of his allotted time. Instead, as I said, I dropped out completely.

I believe that the Bible alone, even if it contains all of the needed information, is a dead book until it is not only consumed by us but also brought to Life within us by the Holy Spirit.

When do we have it all? By all do I mean all that God has? That is a bit much, isn't it?

However, while we have time remaining of our allotted time, we can and should be growing. God will never run out of things to quicken to us and in us, will He? Is this continuing to work while it is day... that is before the night comes?

What a mighty God we serve! Give God the glory!

I couldn't agree more. It really is truly astonishing, that right at our fingertips, (or tongue-tips to be more precise), is a vehicle for entering into the throne room of the Creator of the universe! A vehicle that is available to us 24 hours a day, every day of the year. If we had such a privilege to be able to engage the ear of the queen of England or the president of either the US or the European Union or perhaps even the pope, with as much freedom, we would be the envy of the world, and people from all corners of the globe would be clamouring at our door asking for favours. Yet we, even more astonishingly, avail ourselves of this privilege so little!

I couldn't agree more. It really is truly astonishing, that right at our fingertips, (or tongue-tips to be more precise), is a vehicle for entering into the throne room of the Creator of the universe! A vehicle that is available to us 24 hours a day, every day of the year. If we had such a privilege to be able to engage the ear of the queen of England or the president of either the US or the European Union or perhaps even the pope, with as much freedom, we would be the envy of the world, and people from all corners of the globe would be clamouring at our door asking for favours. Yet we, even more astonishingly, avail ourselves of this privilege so little!
