There may be some Preterists who agree with some of what I say in these two posts (maybe not). I think if there is truth in what I say below regarding the above topic, then it just may be important enough to the serious Bible student. This is viewing Biblical apocalyptic literature from a different angle (and maybe the correct angle?). It speaks of a terrible time for the saints at the end.

1 sun moon stars.png

Jacob was the ruler of his clan. In Genesis 37:9-10 the sun represents Jacob, and the moon, Rachel, Joseph's mother. The stars represent the people, Joseph’s brothers. In Revelation 12:1 the stars refer metaphorically to the same 12 tribes of Israel, who is the daughter of Eve, who is a type of the church.

2 sun moon stars.png

Psalm 147:1-5 is referring both to people as the stars, and to the stars themselves. It’s a typical example of the poetic literature found in the Bible.

3 sun moon stars.png

The earth quaking, the heavens, the sun, the moon and the stars are not meant in a literal sense in the above verses, but are being used metaphorically to signify the magnitude of the catastrophic impact of the judgement that came upon Seir and Edom. The same type of metaphors are used repeatedly in apocalyptic prophetic literature.

4 sun moon stars.png

The sun and the moon
5 sun moon stars.png

The sun gives light to the world. The moon reflects the light of the sun. The Word of God gives light to the world. The elect people of God reflect the light of the Word.

Judgement of Pharaoh & Egypt (circa 587 B.C)

Ezekiel 32
2 Son of man, take up a lament for Pharaoh king of Egypt, and say to him, You were like a young lion of the nations, but you were like a sea-monster. And you came out with your rivers, and troubled the waters with your feet, and fouled their rivers.

7 And when I put you out, I will cover the heaven and make its stars dark; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give her light.

These are metaphors, and apocalyptic literature in the Bible is full of them.

Judgement on Babylon (circa 539 B.C)

Isaiah 13
1 The burden of Babylon, which Isaiah the son of Amoz saw:

4 The noise of a multitude in the mountains, as of a great people; a tumultuous noise of the kingdoms of nations gathered together; the LORD of hosts gathers an army for the battle.
5 They come from a far country, from the end of the heavens, the LORD and the weapons of His indignation, to destroy all land.

9 Behold, the day of the LORD comes, cruel and with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land waste; and He shall destroy its sinners out of it.
10 For the stars of the heavens and their constellations shall not give light; the sun shall be darkened in its going forth, and the moon shall not reflect its light.

11 And I will visit evil on the world, and their iniquity on the wicked. And I will cause the arrogance of the proud to cease, and will lay low the pride of tyrants.
12 I will make a man more precious than gold; even a man than the fine gold of Ophir.
13 So I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall move out of its place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of His fierce anger.

17 Behold, I will stir up the Medes against them, who shall not value silver; and they shall not delight in gold.
18 And bows shall dash the young men to pieces; and they shall have no pity on the fruit of the womb; their eye shall not pity sons.
19 And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the majestic beauty of the Chaldees, shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.
20 It shall never be inhabited forever, nor shall it be lived in from generation to generation; nor shall the Arabian pitch his tent there; nor shall the shepherds make their flocks lie down there.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
When Babylon was destroyed, the heavens did not literally shake, the earth was not literally moved out of its place. The stars of the heavens and their constellations did not literally fail to give light, the sun and moon were not literally darkened.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

It’s all metaphor describing the magnitude of the catastrophic impact of God’s judgement upon nations, empires, and their rulers.

The kingdom of Judah

Isaiah 24
5 And the land is defiled under its people; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, and have broken the everlasting covenant.

23 Then the moon shall blush, and the sun shall be ashamed, when the LORD of hosts shall reign in Mount Zion, in Jerusalem, and gloriously before His elders.

6 sun moon stars.png

The nations = the sea in Isaiah 60:5
7 sun moon stars.png

8 sun moon stars.png

Jude 1
12 These are sunken rocks in your love feasts, feasting together with you; feeding themselves without fear; waterless clouds being carried about by winds; fruitless autumn trees, having died twice, having been plucked up by the roots;
13 wild waves of the sea foaming up their shames; wandering stars for whom blackness of darkness has been kept forever.

Revelation 1
16 And He had seven stars in His right hand, and out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword. And His face was like the sun shining in its strength.
20 the mystery of the seven stars which you saw in My right hand and the seven golden lampstands. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands which you saw are the seven churches.

Obadiah 1

1 The vision of Obadiah. So says the Lord God concerning Edom: We have heard a message from the LORD, and a messenger is sent among the nations: Rise up, even let us rise up against her for battle.
2 Behold, I have given you to be small among the nations; you are greatly despised.
3 The pride of your heart has deceived you, dwelling in the clefts of the rocks, his dwelling is lofty; saying in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?
4 Though you rise high like the eagle, and though you set your nest between the stars, I will bring you down from there, says the LORD.

9 sun moon stars.png

Revelation 18
24 And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all those who were slain on the earth.

10th sun moon stars.png

“Mountains" refer to the rulers of great and powerful nations, and the islands refer to (Gentile) nations.

“The heaven departing like a scroll” refers metaphorically to God withdrawing from the earth, and completely giving men over to their wickedness. This is quite possibly what will occur immediately after the resurrection of those who are Christ’s at His coming, at the sounding of the seventh trumpet.

I wonder if it is God withdrawing from the earth, or the earth being removed from his presence.
I'm thinking in terms of Adam and Eve getting booted out of Eden.

removed from his presence... my punishment is more than I can bare. "Cain"

just thinking..
Hugs

Good point. God is omnipresent and He does not go anywhere, so it's the earth being entirely removed from His presence (His Spirit no longer striving with man).

All interesting thoughts, and to a large extent, I do believe metaphor plays a big part in this sort of language. But…I do urge a little caution in assigning it all to metaphor. We must acknowledge that we believe in and worship a supernatural God. It is entirely possible that not all of these passages are metaphoric.
Take, for example, the reference above to Sodom and Gomorrah. Just recently ‘science’ has discovered a city and evidence that supports the biblical story to a T. Right down to the rather bizarre high salinity in the area after the event. You ought to check it out, its rather fascinating…and it substantiates the fact that sometimes when the bible claims cataclysmic events happened…they did. And…just because poetic or even metaphoric language is being used, doesn’t also discount the fact that something correspondingly physical and cosmic happened as well, and was just described in a particular way.

Space rock smashing ancient cities may have inspired the Bible

Like the flood, I've always viewed the description of Sodom & Gomorrah's destruction as literal (although I thought that in the case of Sodom & Gomorrah it was probably volcanic and seismological), but just like the flood, Sodom & Gomorrah's destruction are described very differently to the destruction of cities like Jerusalem, Babylon, etc and the defeat of their kingdoms and kings. And whereas the imagery of sun and moon being darkened etc being linked to the destruction of cities, kingdoms and their rulers, are prophesied by the prophets before the events, the other two were no doubt described after the events by the witness of the only survivors after the calamity (Noah and Lot). But very interesting article you posted, thanks :)

10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.
4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.

Matthew 24:29-30KJV
29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:
30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

1 Corinthians 3:13KJV
13 Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.

9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;

Malachi 3:2KJV
2 But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap:

Psalm 46:6KJV

Psalm 50:3KJV
3 Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about him.

Psalm 97:5KJV
5 The hills melted like wax at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.

Isaiah 66:15KJV
15 For, behold, the Lord will come with fire, and with his chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire.

Zechariah 14:12KJV
12 And this shall be the plague wherewith the Lord will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.

Nahum 1:5-6KJV
5 The mountains quake at him, and the hills melt, and the earth is burned at his presence, yea, the world, and all that dwell therein.
6 Who can stand before his indignation? and who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? his fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by him.

Revelation 20:9KJV
9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.

Hello Truth7t7. Welcome back. Sorry I spilled the water over you and woke you up. Stay wide awake now.. It doesn't explain it clearly at all. All your post clearly proves is that God uses a great deal of metaphor throughout the Bible.

on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:
9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;

Malachi 3:2KJV
2 But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap:

Psalm 46:6KJV
6 The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted.

I guess that to you believe that the new creation is not in Christ and already here since Christ rose from the dead, because the words are just metaphor:

Galatians 6
15 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature.

Sodom and Gomorrah was just a metaphor too, pinocchio is blushing on that claim

Luke 17:29-30KJV
29 But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.
30 Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.
