You just accused a great many Christians on MISSING out on gifts that God has.... If you believe that... then that is on you. I don't believe it.
This is yet another issue of raising oneself up over others.... Seems that many Christians like to do that.
God is the giver of ALL THINGS... I lack NOTHING.... and I do not speak in tongues. I am not going to argue with you.

Addy, I know this post is about "Tongues" but I was actually speaking of gifts in general, and actually the higher gifts in particular. As far as the Church, I'm afraid that most of the Church do not abide in Christ, nor He in them. They cannot hear God's voice, nor have spiritual revelation of the actual meaning of God's Word. There is only one interpretation for each verse in the Bible. Without the Spirit of Truth many have gathered to themselves false teachers that base their interpretation of Scripture on their carnal experience, and do not even believe the Words of Jesus, let alone obey Him.

No, they are one of the gifts and the gifts are given by The HolySpirit ….i can not speak in tongues and at one time felt very ‘ lower ‘ down than other Christians who have claimed that I should be able to speak in tongues. It caused me to doubt so any things at one time, now I am open to the gift, but value the gifts I have been given xx
Rita
Even so sister!

The very first non-Catholic church group where I attended taught that without tongues there could be no salvation. Never have read the Bible before and knowing only what the nuns and priests had taught I was completely ignorant about such things.

I learned a lot of good things in that first church including to read the Bible myself. They were very strong on that point. Eventually God showed me that what you say is correct. Not all believers speak in tongues and a gift of tongues while it certainly may be from God is not required by Him in order to be with Him always.

<<<Yes, they are for everybody.>>>

I do not think they are.

May I ask. Do you also have the gift of interpreting your “tongues”? Do you the speak same tongue when you do, or speak different tongues?

There are only two gifts that I do not have from 1 Corinthians 12. Diverse kinds of Tongues, and Interpretation of Tongues. But, of course, I do have the tongues of Mark 16:17 and the rest listed there.

The Corinthian church was ignorant about spiritual gifts - they had forbidden speaking in tongues, which Paul told them to stop doing, in 1 Corinthians 14:9.

Paul instructs them at length in chapter 14 about how tongues and prophecy spoken aloud in church are to be used (the same church to whom he gives the list of all the types of spiritual gifts to in chapter 12) - and told them that he wanted to make sure they come behind in no GIFT while they await the second coming of Jesus:

1Co 1:7 So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ:

The word GIFT there is CHARISMA - which the term CHARISMATIC comes from.

This clearly states Paul wanted them to have every spiritual gift, while they await the return of Jesus - making it obvious that spiritual gifts remain in operation until His return.

Peter said on Pentecost that the gift of the Holy Spirit they and the 120 gathered in the upper room had just received, is for AS MANY AS GOD SHALL CALL in Acts 2:38-39.

Act 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the GIFT of the Holy Ghost.

Act 2:39 For the PROMISE is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, EVEN AS MANY AS THE LORD OUR GOD SHALL CALL.

So per Mark 16, Jesus said speaking in tongues is a sign following those who believe, and per Peter in Acts 2, tongues are for all believers, for all who God calls, and per Paul, charisma lasts until Jesus returns.

Diverse tongues means there’s a diversity of tongues, meaning more than one kind - specifically there are three types of tongues.

The apostolic gifts no longer happen.
1 Corinthians 13:8
Really?

"Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away." I Cor 13:8

If what you say is true then knowledge also no longer happens. He who is ignorant of God and the things of God will always be ignorant!

What are you calling the higher gifts... Can you bear in mind that I am not knowledgeable about this topic?? It seemed to me that you were suggesting that all spirit filled believers are encouraged to speak in tongues ( as in should do so ).
I absolutely agree that the church is littered with false teachers.... I have learned to let NO one teach me. EVERY single person has a different opinion about things.

Wait… are yall pentecostals the ones running thru the chapel while they sing?? Or is that someone else?
I'm not a pentecostal. This is who I am:
I am what I am, a child of the great, "I Am,"
By the blood of the Lamb, the Lamb who was slain!
I'm precious in His sight, the apple of His eye.
I am fearfully and wonderfully made...in His image, and so are you, my friend!

Yes, I have kind of left it in the Lords hands for quite some years now……as a lone Christian for so long I figured if I started speaking in tongues they might have actually locked me up !
So would some here do, I guess... if it was up to them!

God can work with people in many different ways. Salvation is through Jesus, but but people who I believe do know Him know Him in different ways and in different degrees. For me speaking in tongues daily is part of living for God daily! Not every person living for God does it as I do...

No, they’re not for everybody- they're only for those who believe, per Jesus in Mark 16.

And Paul says he prayed in tongues more than anybody, and told the church at Corinth that they should all speak in tongues.

Maranatha
And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.” Mark 16:17, 18
This translation doesn't appear to be saying, "all." Otherwise...

Agreed.

Even though Paul told the Corinthians church to stop forbidding tongues, and explained that he wanted them have all the gifts in operation in their church until Jesus returns, and listed all the gifts of the spirit, and explained how to use those gifts during church services, cessationists try to use 1 Corinthians 13:8-11 as their proof text that spiritual gifts ended when the Bible was completed.

But note that when that which is perfect comes, we then see face to face.

The Bible has no face - it has a cover, a binding, pages, chapters, verses, etc. - but Jesus does.

Here’s the passage:

1Co 13:8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

1Co 13:9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.

1Co 13:10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.

1Co 13:11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

1Co 13:12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

Notice in verse 8, three things end, when that which is perfect comes: prophecy, tongues, and knowledge.

Yet in the last days, knowledge increases, says Daniel the prophet:

Dan 12:4 But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.

We are currently in an explosion of the increase in man’s knowledge, to where it’s now doubling every six months.

And prophecy also increases in the last days, as God pours out His spirit:

Act 2:15 For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.

Act 2:16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;

Act 2:17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:

Act 2:18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:

Since knowledge and prophecy increases in the last days and end times - and knowledge, prophecy and tongues end at the same time - it becomes obvious that tongues and prophecy, which are gifts of the Holy Spirit, are for today, until Jesus returns and they are no longer needed.

That’s why Paul told the Corinthians that he wanted them to have every spiritual gift while they await the coming of Jesus - because then they won’t be needed any longer, and will expire - when that which is perfect - the kingdom of God and its king, Jesus, comes to earth, and we know as we are known, and we see Him face to face.

Shalom Aleichem

Mark 16:16-18 are given to all believers. (Note, no interpretation is listed, nor necessary to operate in.)
1 Corinthians 12 are to whom the Spirit gives them for the profit of all and are the "better gifts."

<<<Mark 16:16-18 are given to all believers.>>>

Do all, when they lay hands on the sick, the sick recovers?
Do all speak with new tongues?
Do all cast out demons?
Do all take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them?

Those who believe, is inclusive of all those who believe, otherwise it would have to say, these signs follow some who believe, instead of THOSE who believe.

At age 77 with serious shortness of breath problems I don't do that much any more... but, yes, I used to dance like David danced and I would also run as led by the Spirit of God...

I must go to a medical appointment now. I will be back hopefully later today!

It says that these signs will accompany them, it does not say that each individual will speak in tongues.
