Does there have to be a purpose? "Works" are activities generated by the Holy Spirit that conform to the principle of loving your neighbor as yourself. If you see someone in need, you help them.

This world is crying out for a few good works.:D

But if you need a scriptural reason...

14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15 nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:14-16)

That's easy, Jesus said "The work God requires is to believe in the one he has sent" (John 6:28-29)
and Paul said "Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling" (Philippians 2:12)
Doing good material works in the world is fine, but those verses should take top priority..:)

@Dropship Philippians 1.6 also says: "He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ".

To some people, work is their "religion", my late dad was like that, he said to my mother "That shoe factory's my life" and like all workaholics he completely lost his sense of perspective on things, as a kid he once kicked me like a dog because I'd thrown orange peel down the toilet and it was too buoyant to flush.
He drank wine to relieve his stresses and that sent him further round the bend, he ended up dying of liver cancer aged 62.
