I used to think that way. I guess sometimes I still do. It only makes sense. Do something wrong, get punished. However, as stated in another thread, there's a huge difference in discipline and punishment. If the definition of the word forgiveness is true, (To give up the will to punish) and, God forgives, No you're not being punished. We do get disciplined, but, I'm not so certain that it's physical trauma or conditions.
I have Osteoarthritis in most of the major joints in my body. Granted, I do my "fair share" of sinning, sadly to admit. Seeing that this is an uncurable condition, that would make my "punishment" lifelong. That's hardly a forgiven state. That's living in wrath. I believe that many of these conditions, while challenging, are "allowed" to help us. We're humbled, strenghthened, and it helps us to be, sympathetic, understanding, and more loving to someone else who suffers.
While, physical ailments are a result of the "fallen condition", they aren't always a bad thing. Many people who suffer have great qualities as a result of the suffering.
My mother in law has Psoriasis. Her doctor said "This is the worse case of Psoriasis I've ever seen in my life". She's been taking medicine and such. Alot of it is clearing up.
