I submit that the Lord didn't tell us not to sin because we hurt others when we do. I submit the Lord told us not to sin because when we sin, we hurt ourselves.

I'm with Nancy. Not submitting to God hurts ourselves, others, and in fact, God. It offends the Creator when we don't live by His rules, which are always benevolent. It hurts Him to see us hurt ourselves.

Could it not be a bit of both?
I think God is killing two birds with one stone. He doesn't want me to hurt you by kicking you in your shins. However, your shins will get better. I would suffer a long time for my sin. So God is warning me: Don't kick Nancy in the shins (or you'll suffer a long time).

I submit we focus on kicking two birds in the shins, not stoning Nancy with one stone, mixing it together and calling it righteousness?:contemplate:

Faith -- even as small as a mustard seed -- is a given. So just focus on righteousness, not sin.
A righteous person is a moral, upright person who follows or does what is right.. The Righteousness of God through Christ IS characterized by this.

"...the definition of righteousness is the state or condition of being declared upright, moral, just, or virtuous. This righteousness is not in your own eyes, but when people look at you they know and declare you to be an upstanding, moral person."

This standard of God's Righteousness through Christ is too high without His cleansing of our sin, and having The Holy Spirit in us , otherwise I do not think we have any righteousness at all, without those two things.
When we know to do the right, just thing...and do NOT do it we are no better than an unbeliever. And, if we try to do the "righteous" thing on our own steam and even take credit for it, there is our reward.
hope this makes sense!

OH it makes sense dear sister . TWO THINGS . A we have no righteousness outside of JESUS CHRIST
and B , if we walk in darkness and do evil and justify sin , THEN WE DONT KNOW HIM , its just lip service .
For He or she who belongs to CHRIST has what is known as THE HOLY SPIRIT . Teaching and instructing and equipping
the lambs to walk righteously loving the truth of His every Word .

Could it not be a bit of both?
It is . notice what is written in JOB . When we do good it helps others when we do evil it hurts others .
And when we do evil we hurt and destroy our selves . Working evil unto their own destruction .
THE BIBLE says its BOTH . ITS why i try and do al;l to just get folks into that bible . NOW LIFT THOSE HANDS AND PRAISE THE KING JESUS

What is doing evil, and what is doing good?
Anything that disobeys GOD is evil . Followin another jesus or another gospel IS evil .
Omitting things from the bible and replacing them with our own ideas is EVIL .
I suggest we go back to bibles and learn that GOD and HIS CHRIST real well . We have folks on this site
that even had the audacity to say that muslims , jews , buddists and other religions dont have to BELEIVE IN CHRIST
Talk about EVIL and great destruction by GOD awaits those who taught this and those who beleived its lie .
preaching contrary to JESUS is evil . teaching contrary to what the apostels wrote is evil . LEts start there
and examine ourselves to see what and WHO we truly do follow . To sum it up , IF it calls evil good , ITS EVIL
and if it calls good evil , WELL its evil . Learn those bibles my friends .

Why would any Christian be asking this question? The Bible shows us very clearly -- from Genesis to Revelation -- the things which are good and the things which are evil.

The problem today is that the evildoers are daily calling good "evil" and evil "good". But God has already pronounced a "Woe" upon these evildoers.

I don't understand the Faith vs. Righteousness thing? I would agree that all Virtue comes from Christ, although I would point out that Virtue can *unconsciously* come from Christ, just like an infant doesn't know how its bills are being paid.

But to distinguish Faith from Righteousness is a little deeper than this. Our Faith, to be operated in a conscious, Christian way, is a deliberate choice to follow Christ's word to our conscience on a regular basis. It is "walking in the Spirit."

So Faith is not just a recognition of where our Virtue comes from, but it is also a participation in that Righteousness, in effect obtaining that Righteousness for ourselves as well. We are righteous not in the sense that we are righteous apart from Christ, but only in the sense that we obtain Virtue by living in proximity to Christ--actually, in intimate connection with Christ, like a branch is connected to the trunk of a tree.

When we speak of Faith, therefore, I don't think it can become an independent kind of Faith, disconnected from Righteousness. It is meant to exist in connection with Christ, so that Christ's righteousness becomes ours, as well.

Col 2.6 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, 7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.

Well whatever you think… we all have one life to live.

Well whatever you think… we all have one life to live.

And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

James 4:17 King James Version (KJV)
Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
