The California Reparations Task Force was started in 2021 to address systemic racism against African Americans, not slavery. The task force is designed to recommend ways to educate the California public and propose remedies for ongoing systemic racism. The task force specifically looked at segregation, redlining, voter suppression, police profiling, health care discrepancies, housing discrimination. The often quoted $800 billion figure is the task forces estimation of the total cost of discriminatory policies and practices. The task force is not recommending any individual cash payouts. What the committee is recommending is changes in legislation and policies regarding racial profiling, housing discrimination and voter suppression. Also being recommended are community improvements, medical wellness centers, improved schools, and police accountability.
