The usual Greek word used for human eating is “phagon”, however, this is NOT the word used in these passages. John uses the word, “trogon”, which means, “to munch or to gnaw “- like an animal. Jesus was again using hyperbole as he often did to drive his point across so that the crowd would understand that he was NOT speaking metaphorically. He meant what he said.

Just as the Passover Lamb was to be eaten, it is also true for the Lamb of God.

As to your question – we absolutely believe we are consuming the flesh and blood of Jesus Christ - Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. We are not eating veins and muscle tissue. We are consuming Him in a Sacramental manner under the appearance of bread and wine.

In John 6:66, a large faction of His disciples left Him and no longer followed Him because they freaked- out over what He told them. Jesus turned to the Twelve and asked them:
“Do you also want to leave” (John 6:67).

They chose to stay with Him because He never led them astray. At the Last Supper, He showed them HOW to consume Him - sacramentally. Does that help?
I'd like to add something for @ProDeo who is very learned.

John 6:53 where Jesus uses the word EAT,,,,it literally means TO CHEW....
it's different from other times when the word EAT is used.

The early Christians were known to be cannibals due to this belief.
Also, the Apostolic and ECFs believed in the presence of Jesus in the host....
thus, His body and blood...as Jesus stated at the Last Supper.

Ignatius of Antioch 105AD a disciple of John and Peter
. I desire the bread of God, the heavenly bread, the bread of life, which is the flesh of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who became afterwards of the seed of David and Abraham; and I desire the drink, namely His blood, which is incorruptible love and eternal life.

They [i.e. the Gnostics] abstain from the Eucharist and from prayer, because they do not confess that THE EUCHARIST IS THE FLESH OF OUR SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST, flesh which suffered for our sins and which the Father, in his goodness, raised up again. (Letter to Smyrnians 7:1)

Justin Martyr 100-165AD disciple of Polycarp, disciple of John
For not as common bread nor common drink do we receive these; but since Jesus Christ our Savior was made incarnate by the word of God and had both flesh and blood for our salvation, so too, as we have been taught, the food which has been made into the Eucharist by the Eucharistic prayer set down by Him, AND BY THE CHANGE OF WHICH our blood and flesh is nourished, IS BOTH THE FLESH AND THE BLOOD OF THAT INCARNATED JESUS. (First Apology, 66)

There's much more if one wishes to study this.

I think BOL had it with "gnaw" which is what my research has shown as well. The idea not gnawing is even more abrupt.

Nice references there with the fathers.

There are more references but it takes too much time.
I wish I had the collection of writings, but it's about 15 volumes and not available here...so I use the net.

That should take you right to the page. That page isn't searchable but churchfathers.org is. Not sure how extensive the search function is but it's worth a look.

Thanks for sharing what you believe. As for a comparison, consider what Jesus also said -

Matt 18:20 - For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”

We are here gathered in His name, do you like in the Eucharist also believe in transubstantiation here ?

Sorry for the questions, just trying to understand you.

And BTW, in context Jesus is talking to his disciples.

Transubstantiation occurs specifically during the consecration of the Eucharist.

Jesus is referring to His spiritual presence in Matt 18:20, not His physical presence.

Jesus says I am the bread of life John 6: 35
Again V 48, I am the bread of life
Verse 51 he says, "I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever and the bread that I will give me my flesh for the life of the world." He doesn't say his word or his spirit.
Then 54: whoever feeds upon my flesh ...has eternal life
Verse 55: for my flesh is real good and my blood is real drink
Verse 56: whoever feeds upon my flesh...dwells in me and I dwell in him
Verse 58: ...the one who feeds upon this bread will live forever

It's what it says and what we believe

Ah there we have it, the tired old "out of context" argument. Quickly translated that means, it doesn't jive with the narrative you've been fed. Hilarious

Btw you didn't even bother to answer that poster question.
Well you rip them out of their context. It may be old, but it still remains true when folks pull their verses out of context.

There's much more if one wishes to study this.
these types of texts are the reason I now rarely go outside scripture unless necessary as for the cannibal Christians they were simply cannibals and without any morals no christian would kill another to eat human flesh. ( I do not mean here I do not believe what you wrote) as for believing the Eucharist is the flesh and blood of Christ as an ex catholic we were taught they were symbols done in remembrance if I remember correctly.

Jesus revealed something much deeper—that He Himself is the “bread of life” sent from heaven.

When Jesus said, “Whoever feeds on My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day”, many were shocked. They understood His words only in a physical sense, imagining that He meant eating His literal body and drinking His literal blood. For the Jewish people, this was offensive and unthinkable, because God’s law strictly forbade the drinking of blood (Leviticus 17:14). They did not understand that Jesus was speaking about a spiritual reality.

His flesh points to His body that would be given up on the cross—a life offered in sacrifice for the world. His blood represents the new covenant and forgiveness of sins that would come through His death. This connects to the Passover in Exodus, where the lamb’s body was eaten and its blood was a sign that saved Israel from death. Jesus is now the true Passover Lamb, and His blood saves from eternal death.

To “feed” on His flesh and “drink” His blood means to fully receive Him into the deepest part of our lives. It means believing in His sacrifice, trusting His words, obeying His teachings, and depending on Him daily for spiritual strength. Just as we cannot live physically without food and drink, we cannot have spiritual life without continually coming to Him. This is not a one-time act, but an ongoing relationship of faith and closeness—what Jesus calls abiding in Him.

When He says, “Whoever feeds on My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him”, He describes a deep union between Himself and the believer. His life becomes our life, and we share in His Spirit. And because of this union, He promises, “I will raise him up on the last day”—meaning we will be resurrected to eternal life with Him.

Many in the crowd could not accept this teaching. John 6:60 tells us they said, “This is a hard saying; who can understand it?” and verse 66 says many turned back and no longer followed Him. They stumbled because they focused on the physical meaning, missing the spiritual truth. But those who stayed, like Peter, remained because they knew that Jesus alone had “the words of eternal life” (John 6:68), even if they did not fully understand everything yet.

For those who do believe, this passage is one of the greatest promises in Scripture—that by truly receiving Jesus, trusting in His sacrifice, and living in daily fellowship with Him, we have eternal life now, and the assurance that He will raise us up on the last day to be with Him forever.

Blessings

So, let look at some of "Mary's Lies".

I'll post 15 lies for you, as taught by the "cult of mary".

Here is what they teach that : Mary Said, that they believe.

And remember, Reader.......none of this is found in any Bible verse, in any bible. And that is because it is completely made up by the MaryCult "Fathers".

-
-

1. Whoever shall faithfully serve me by the recitation of the Rosary shall receive special graces.

For children: If you pray the Rosary, God will help you make good choices when you’re not sure what to do.

2. I promise my special protection and the greatest graces to all those who shall recite the Rosary.

For children: When you pray the Rosary, Mary promises to make an extra effort to protect you and send you special blessings.

3. The Rosary shall be a powerful armor against hell; it will destroy vice, decrease sin, and defeat heresies.

For children: When you pray the Rosary, it helps you to be good. If you struggle with a certain bad habit, like lying or hitting your siblings, praying the Rosary will help you overcome these habits. Praying the Rosary is like riding around in a tank! You’ll have super strong protection against the devil!

4. The Rosary will cause virtue and good works to flourish; it will obtain for souls the abundant mercy of God; it will withdraw the hearts of men from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them to the desire for eternal things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means.

For children: Praying the Rosary will help you grow in holiness, because it helps you grow in the virtues like love, honesty, wisdom, faithfulness, and courage. Which virtues do you need to grow in? Pray the Rosary! Our Lady will help you!

5. The soul which recommends itself to me by the recitation of the Rosary shall not perish.

You won’t go to hell = if you pray the Rosary. That doesn’t mean you won’t go to purgatory.

For children: If you trust in Mary by praying the Rosary, she promises you won’t go to hell. (If you are not comfortable telling your child about hell yet, you can say something like “Mary promises to help you get to heaven if you pray the Rosary and trust in her.”)

6. Whoever shall recite the Rosary devoutly, applying himself to the consideration of its sacred mysteries, shall never be conquered by misfortune. God will not chastise him in His justice; he shall not perish by an unprovided death. If he be just, he shall remain in the grace of God and become worthy of eternal life.

For children: If you make a habit of praying the Rosary, Mary will wrap her mantle around you like a good mother! She will help you when you are sad or having a hard time. What kind of hard times are you having right now? Are you sad about a problem with a friend? Disappointed or angry about something? Mary will make sure it’s not too much for you to handle!

7. Whoever shall have a true devotion for the Rosary shall not die without the sacraments of the Church.

Tthis sacrament also absolves you of any unconfessed sins.

For children: If you make a habit of praying the Rosary, Mary will make sure a priest anoints you with special oil to help you if ever get really sick. This is called the Anointing of the Sick. This sacrament sends you special graces that help you endure your illness and even grow in holiness through it.

8. Those who are faithful to recite the Rosary shall have during their life and at their death the light of God and the plentitude of His graces. At the moment of death, they shall participate in the merits of the saints in paradise.

For children: Mary promises that if you pray the Rosary faithfully, you will have the light of God shining upon you and you will have many rewards in heaven like the saints.

9. I shall deliver from Purgatory those who have been devoted to the Rosary.

Mary promises to “get us out” of purgatory quickly! She is our greatest Advocate.

For children: Mary promises that if you pray the Rosary, she will help you become pure and holy so that you go to heaven.

10. The faithful children of the Rosary shall merit a high degree of glory in Heaven.

Praying the Rosary merits us a higher place in Heaven because we will become more holy.

For children: If you pray the Rosary faithfully, you will sit very close to Jesus and his Mother in Heaven.

11. You shall obtain all you ask of me by the recitation of the Rosary.

Mary is our advocate and she mediates between her Son and us. She will ask Jesus for all that we ask, provided it’s good for our salvation and doesn’t violate God’s perfect will for us.

For children: When you pray the Rosary, you can ask Mary for what you need, and she will talk to her son about it. Jesus loves his mom so much that he pays attention to what she says!

12. All those who propagate the Holy Rosary shall be aided by me in their necessities.

This means that when you tell others about the Rosary, including teaching your children to pray it, Mary will take special care to ensure you have what you need both spiritually and physically.

For children: When you share what you know about the Rosary with other people, Mary loves it! When you do this, she promises that you will have what you need to become more holy. She even promises that you will have enough food, clothing, and a home to live in.

13. I have obtained from my Divine Son that all the advocates of the Rosary shall have for intercessors the entire celestial court during their life and at the hour of death.

Mary promises that if we encourage others to pray the Rosary, the angels in heaven will be interceding for us not only during our lives, but when we die.

For children: When you encourage other people to pray the Rosary, Mary promises that all the angels in heaven will be praying for you!

14. All who recite the Rosary are my sons and daughters, the brothers and sisters of Jesus Christ.

When we recite the Rosary, we are the children of Mary, and Jesus is our BROTHER.... We are part of the Holy Family.

Children: When you pray the Rosary, Mary treats you like her very own child and Jesus becomes like your big brother. You are part of her own family!

15. Devotion to my Rosary is a great sign of predestination.

Saying "out of context" is the debate equivalent of "nah uh". It's meaningless. All your saying is, you disagree with me so you must be wrong. That's mindless.

I can't remember that poster ever sourcing anything. I see no reason to take anything that poster says seriously. Seems lots of others don't either.

He's made up his own religion...
He hates the CC....
don't know why many do.
As if there's a perfect denomination...
they all teach something or other that is not biblical.
Care to hear something?
I can't define myself as Catholic because I don't agree with all dogma/doctrine
and I respect the church enough to know this.
BUT
§A priest....not any of the ones I know...told me that I don't have to believe everything to be Catholic.
I specifically mentioned the Assumption and he said it was fine.
This was rather alarming....maybe Francis had something to do with this idea - I don't know.
But I know better.

That's more than troubling about the priest but sadly there are so many stories like that. It's not Francis it's the post Vatican 2 debacle. It severely damaged the church but that's was the point of the people who perverted its message when it was rolled out.

As to the perfect denomination I disagree with you. For good bad or indifferent, and I've said this to you before, only one denomination can even remotely claim a direct line back to Peter. Period. Whether people like it or not that's the case. Scripture, tradition and the magisterium make up the teaching authority of the church. That's perfect but sadly the people in charge aren't. I see people all the time being led astray from the truth because of how a priest behaves. Or there is something they disagree with. The church isn't a democracy. Jesus didn't take a vote on the real presence in the Eucharist.

Transubstantiation occurs specifically during the consecration of the Eucharist.

So what is it ?

1. a "re-sacrifice" of Christ
2. or a "re-offering" of Christ’s sacrifice
3. or a “re-presentation” of Christ’s sacrifice

I think I understand John 6:22-71 quite different than you, the main theme is about v44, 65 and the proof in v70.

John 6:44 - No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.
John 6:65 - And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”
John 6:70 - Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the Twelve? And yet one of you is a devil.”

Complicated?

Yep.

From :

1367 - The Eucharist is thus a sacrifice because it re-presents (makes present) the sacrifice of the cross, because it is its memorial and because it applies its fruit."

1368 - The sacrifice of Christ and the sacrifice of the Holy Eucharist are one single sacrifice: "The victim is one and the same: the same now offers through the ministry of priests, who then offered himself on the cross; only the manner of offering is different." "And since in this divine sacrifice which is celebrated in the Mass, the same Christ who offered himself once in a bloody manner on the altar of the cross is contained and is offered in an unbloody manner . . . this sacrifice is truly propitiatory."

Seriously ?

What YOU would have to do is post some scripture that states that once we become believers,,,we will be believers forever.

Jesus did not teach this and Paul did not teach this.

Jesus said some could believe for a while and then fall away.

It is NOT…

once we become believers,,,we will be believers forever.

Scripture is Full of Words, you can search, read, accept, believe, doubt, reject…. Your FREEWILL prerogative.
Also by your own POWER you can KEEP your Belief or Discard your Belief.

Inanutshell God Offers TO KEEP your true spiritual Confession TO the Lord…your True Standing of SPIRITUAL Belief “IN HIM”…
Once and Forever….FOR YOU.

Because…
1 John 4
because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

Glory to God,
