Who was the Priest and the Levite most concerned about when they walked around the stripped and beaten man? Who was the expert on Torah most concerned about when he asked Jesus the question?
Jew,They are more concerned about their lives. They are afraid of robbers around there. They are also more concerned about their money.
They see the victim as a problem. Jew and Lawyer..
Whether concerned for their personal safety, or becoming ceremonially unclean from touching a dead body and having to go through purification rites before doing their priestly duties, or the potential costs of tending to an injured man, or about their own personal salvation, they were more worried about themselves then about what was the right thing to do.
That natural self-centeredness, that natural tendency to look out for numero uno is why I think getting free from the power of Sin is a lot deeper than people give it credit for.
