BTW, while the "if it bleeds, it leads" news cycle might lead you to think that violent crime in the US is is getting worse, the FBI stats show that the murder rate has gone way down since peaking in the 1990's (with an uptick during the Covid shutdowns in 2020), and aggravated assault, rape, and robbery are all down or flat since 2005.

And that is why The Sweet Lady carries a Roscoe and has been trained to use it.

(Her hubby may or may not pack also. He ain't sayin', and it's nobody's business.)

Compton where it happened is a dangerous city adjacent to Los Angeles. It's a gang area.

Yes,it is. It isn't like black Compton residents turned rappers and film makers, haven't portrayed that fact in their lyrics and screenplays.

They even kill each other in those black hoods.(Neighborhoods)
The Crips vs. The Bloods.
Even when you're a civilian living there, you know not to wear blue if you're in Blood territory. Or,red when in Crips. Because you will, not might,be killed.

Because the gang terrorists think you're their enemy

I'm not part of the rap genre's target demographic, but even I have heard of Compton's reputation.

I remember when a guy asked me for a ride home from work one evening. It turns out he lived in a pretty rough neighborhood where the people don't look much like me. He said, "I can tell you're not comfortable here. Just drop me off at this convenience store; I can walk it from here". That was both perceptive and thoughtful of him.

This piece of advice stuck with me: If you feel like you wouldn't go to a place unless you're strapped, you gotta ask yourself whether you really need to be there. The people who do live there probably don't have a lot of options, though.

There have been some cases where people have just been sitting in their car and have been shot and killed. They weren't gang members. I remember a woman who was waiting for someone to come out of their house...someone shot and killed her.

Years ago a neighbor friend who is a Christian (from Guatemala) said he was going to move with his brother. When he told me what area, I told him that's a gang area, don't move there. If they don't like the way you look, they will shoot you. So he didn't move and became our apartment manager here back then.

My father's family moved from Green Bay WI to Compton. When he went to school, he was the sole white person in an otherwise black high school, mid 50's.

Much love!

I wonder why they choose Compton to move to? When we came to Los Angeles, we had a few family members in an area about two miles West of downtown. So we moved there and I'm still here. When we first came there were a lot of Hispanics. Now we have Koreans in addition to the Hispanics, some whites and fewer black people.

I don't know, but after a few years they bought on orange grove in Yorba Linda, a much nicer environment.

Much love!
