Yes, tongues is a NEGATIVE sign to unbelievers - it confirm them in their unbelief. And to cessationists as well, the unlearned.

Did you know that in JB Phillips' translation of 1 Cor. 14:22 he actually switched them. He said, tongues therefore is a sign to believers, not unbelievers. Then with an asterisk * told why. He too thought it was a copyist error, but assured the reader verse 22 was the only verse he meddled with in his translation. And he also added the word "sign" with regards to prophecy in the same verse, when the original doesn't. In fact, his translation was what I was reading through (I liked to collect different translations to read through) when I came across that usually troublesome verse and it didn't stop me in my tracks as usual. Reading his corrupted version was what made me take that verse off the shelf once and for all where it had stayed for 30 years, and ask the Holy Spirit to teach me everything I didn't know about tongues. And He did for the next 7 years! That's how long it took to write that small book. God's on His own time-table.

What I found also that no one refers to anymore, if ever, is the parallel between the sign of tongues and the sign of Jesus! Now do you want to read my book? LOL.
I did not know 'that' about JB Phillips' translation. I actually don't even have a copy of his work, at all.
How "little" is your little book? I don't remember ever hearing you say 'how much' or 'where to get' it either. I do feel I have had a pretty good track record of people receiving when I have ministered it.

It is a little over 100 pages. About a quarter inch thick. You can get it on Kindle from Amazon.com, or on ebay.

Here is what the editor and one Amazon customer have said about it.

The editor:

Although the topic of tongues has been covered in many books, this little book stands out, because it has new things to say and breathes new life into a discussion Christians have been having for decades. Not in “addition” to scripture, but letting all-scripture, rather than denominational opinions form new answers. No matter how much you’ve studied, either pro or con, you’ll be surprised to find original thoughts due to the author’s original way of thinking, uncluttered by denominational biases, but letting the Word of God systematically speak for itself.

Amazon customer:

I have been a Pentecostal/Charismatic for 50 years. I have read most books on the gift of tongues. I have found this book the best I have ever read. It is well researched, and she uses a good combination of Scriptures to build a very strong foundation for what she has discovered, both through the New Testament and through hers and others experiences in how the gift has been used in Bible times and in the modern day. I was really blessed by reading this book, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to know the truth about the gift of tongues and how it is a sign, and especially for those who are seeking for the gift. Buy it! Read it! You will definitely not be disappointed. And this is coming from one who has an M.A. in English Literature, and an M.Div, and who is very discriminating when it comes to receiving literature on the gifts of the Spirit, especially tongues!

In Arizona were I lived some teenagers circled around one of their unsaved friends they brought to church to pray for her. They were all praying in tongues, but what she HEARD was English. God drew her to Him through the gift of interpretation of tongues.
Curious , when was she saved ? Right after the prayer for her ?
Another thing about speaking in tongues. There are two separate gifts of speaking in tongues. Mark 16:17 is without interpretation as it is not needed. The tongues are prayer or praise TO GOD for EACH INDIVIDUAL . But in 1 Corinthians 12, this separate gift of tongues MUST have interpretation as 1 Corinthians 14:6 tells what these messages FROM GOD are saying to us. That second one is an OFFICE FOR THE PROFIT OF ALL. that is not given to everyone who is saved like Mark 16 is. That is why in 1 Corinthians 12:30 it tells us not everyone has that office, and NOT that not everyone has been given the gift of tongues for prayer, and the unlearned teach, not realizing there are two gifts, only one being a sign.
To pray in tongues or speak in tongues to a gathering it is all the same process of the Holy Spirit giving the utterance , I have done both . The Holy Spirit uses your speaking processes to give the utterance , but we must be open to the Holy Spirit using us as He wills .

Two gifts that involve tongues . They are both empowered by the Holy Spirit .
The Gift of Speaking in Tongues .
The Gift of Interpretation of Tongues .

She became a believer that night. What she heard was the voice of God who told her deep things while the others were praying in tongues for her. While they were praying in tongues she began to cry. It reminds me of the night I was born again. It wasn't interpretation of tongues, but just His voice speaking 8 sentences that seared into my memory. It was a prophecy. I will never forget them. Nor anything else He has said over the years.

To pray in tongues or speak in tongues to a gathering it is all the same process of the Holy Spirit giving the utterance , I have done both . The Holy Spirit uses your speaking processes to give the utterance , but we must be open to the Holy Spirit using us as He wills .

10To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
1 Corinthians 12 tongues MUST have interpretation as the are FROM GOD. They are for the profit of all. But that is not so in Mark 16. No interpretation is required for mentioned as a sign. Those signs are for us as individuals and are not for the "profit of all."

The chapter of 1 Corinthians 14 is actually a lesson of distinguishing between the two gifts of tongues, not between tongues and the gift of prophecy, another gift altogether. The Mark 16 tongues to the individual is the prayer language TO GOD. The office of tongues for the profit of all is being referred to as prophecy because of the interpretation, and equal in importance because the interpretations are FROM GOD. That is the tongues where it is limited to 2 or 3 and 1 interpret them all. Only the Mark 16 tongues is a sign to the unbeliever, confirming them in their unbelief. So if everyone was using their individual gift of tongues all together, where there is no interpretation required, strangers will think they've all gone crazy. But if say on a Wednesday night prayer meeting where all are members and no strangers, then the whole congregation all praising God together, there is freedom to praise Him whichever way you like - in the Spirit, or with the personal understanding. It is quite beautiful.

You may not have ever heard of the "office" of tongues or interpretation, but this gift is not given to all, and is spoken of with other offices such as apostles, prophets, healers, etc., which makes it safe to say that because there are not many given the gift of diverse kinds of tongues, nor interpretation of tongues, they are offices from God.

28 And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?

That is how the gift of interpretation of tongues works, even today. I've seen it. The young lady's born again moment was when she let them pray over her so as her friends prayed over her in tongues the Holy Spirit let her understand them as a showing to young lady what her faith had given her .
Acts 2:8 And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born? Lets say on the Day of Pentecost there was a German, a Frenchman, and a Russian who all could each communicate with each other in Hebrew or Armaic, but also knew their native tongue which is what they each heard all of the disciples speaking as a choir. It was not a cacophony of 120 different languages all spoken at the same time. Each heard only their language.

So the German HEARD German. The Frenchman HEARD French. And the Russian HEARD Russian. That is how the gift of interpretation of tongues works, even today. I've seen it. In Arizona were I lived some teenagers circled around one of their unsaved friends they brought to church to pray for her. They were all praying in tongues, but what she HEARD was English. God drew her to Him through the gift of interpretation of tongues.
Are you saying the "multitude" of people present ALL had the Holy Spirit and the Gift of interpretation of tongues ?

Acts2
6Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.

7And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?

I don't believe either of these two verses refer to the Holy Spirit of God. They refer to 'a holy spirit' you receive from God ,that is praying in a tongue.
The Holy Spirit of God would never have to 'pray to God' in tongues. HE IS GOD!

I more than aware of Who the Holy Spirit is . Yes , I pray with my mind also .
The thing about praying in tongues is the Holy Spirit is praying for me , what I have need of . Is it my spirit communicating to the Holy Spirit what I have need of , I think so . One thing for sure I have had things to happen as I prayed in tongues .
The things that happened were things I never even thought about happening to me . The things that happened to me I have read about in the Bible so I knew with no doubt it was God that made the things happen as I prayed . One of God's calling cards showed up from the Old Testament . I am so blessed by God so much beyond anything I deserve .

As do I, with the exception of your grammar above. Why are you capitalizing Holy Spirit when the scriptures only say "my spirit" and "spirit"? Even the cessationist (anti Charismatic/Pentecostal) translators of the bible) didn't capitalize. That is not The Holy Spirit in those verses.

Question; Do you believe that when your unholy spirit was born again (not resurrected), it remained unholy as "the spirit of Christ IN you the hope of glory."?
The thing about praying in tongues is the Holy Spirit is praying for me , what I have need of . Is it my spirit communicating to the Holy Spirit what I have need of , I think so .
I believe that your belief is based upon bad theology, like I had and believed, from those same cessationist translators as well as those coming into the Pentecostal revival of 1901 in Topeka Kansas. I think you may be misunderstanding this verse below, just like I did. It's a verse I struggled with for many years because my spirit just did not set well with how I was taught, concerning it.

ROM 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

:woohoo!:A testimony all Charismatics and Pentecostal tongue talkers/pray-ers should have.

That is what you have been taught, but contradicts 1 Corinthians 14:2. This chapter tells the only way a human can understand tongues - by the Spirit's gift of interpretation of tongues.
The young lady's born again moment was when she let them pray over her so as her friends prayed over her in tongues the Holy Spirit let her understand them as a showing to young lady what her faith had given her .
She didn't have faith yet. Experiencing the gift of interpretation and what God was saying through the tongues, that the speakers didn't understand, convicted her. It was after that she had faith and was saved.
Are you saying the "multitude" of people present ALL had the Holy Spirit and the Gift of interpretation of tongues ?
No. The truth is God used their supernatural gift and drew her to God through a different supernatural means. Interpretation of Tongues. You don't have to be filled with the Spirit already to experience a supernatural event. God can draw anyone through any means at His disposal. Many pagan kings had supernatural dreams - Pharaoh and Nebuchadnezzar.

That is not The Holy Spirit in those verses.
The whole chapter 1Cor14 is talking about empowerment through the Holy Spirit and also what is being said is instruction for the people the letter was sent to . I do understand what the instructions are that he Paul is giving to them .
Why are you capitalizing Holy Spirit when the scriptures only say "my spirit" and "spirit"?
Because I am talking about the Holy Spirit .
1CO 14:14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful.
He is praying in tongues as the HOLY SPIRIT gives the utterance , his mind is unfruitful because the part of his mind involved with the prayer is not accessible by him , in other words he does not know what words are being said until he hears the words . He does not think the words . The Holy Spirit has control . He is the vessel .
15 What am I to do? I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the mind also; I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the mind also.
As a Christian when we pray with the spirit it is through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit , it can be no other way ! Don't you agree ?
Again this is being said as instructions to the people receiving this letter , things were not being done in proper order there .
Question; Do you believe that when your unholy spirit was born again (not resurrected), it remained unholy as "the spirit of Christ IN you the hope of glory."?
Man is spirit , soul and flesh , all of mankind . I do not know what you mean by "unholy spirit " in fact I did not find that expression in the KJV . You will have to clarify this for me what you are seeking .

No. In fact, though I can hear God's voice, I've never received the interpretation of tongues either, though I've received prophecies, just not in response to tongues. Though I can speak in tongues in prayer or praise TO GOD, I do not have the other gift of tongues that are messages FROM GOD that MUST be interpreted for the profit of all.

There are those who may hear tongues being prayed softly in church and criticize that they don't give the interpretation, not realizing that according to Mark 16 interpretation is not required for our individual sign gift of tongues. The 1 Cor. 12 gift of tongues is not a sign gift. But the individual gift of tongues is.

The whole chapter 1Cor14 is talking about empowerment through the Holy Spirit and also what is being said is instruction for the people the letter was sent to . I do understand what the instructions are that he Paul is giving to them .
The Gr. word "pneuma" is in chapter 14 six times and is not once is it even capitalized. But it is talking about empowerment given to us, from The Holy Spirit.

1CO 14:2* For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
1CO 14:14* For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.
1CO 14:15* What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
1CO 14:16* Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?
1CO 14:32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.

He is praying in tongues as the HOLY SPIRIT gives the utterance ,
Let's deal with the only verse I know of, that may make you believe how you believe. And, I am assuming, you were most likely taught to believe. I know I was.

ACT 2:4* And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

This KJV verse doesn't say "The Holy Spirit gave them utterance"; as you believe, and posted in your quote above. It does say "the Spirit gave them utterance" but spirit shouldn't be capitalized because it is NOT The Holy Spirit's prayer language, it was their spirit's prayer language coming out of them FIRST, just like it happened on the day of Pentecost.

MY QUESTION TO ALL IS; @1stCenturyLady Why is the 'KJV the only translation to make a distinction between the same Greek word pneuma?

"hagion holy pneuma = holy spirit. And hagion holy pneuma = holy Ghost?

his mind is unfruitful because the part of his mind involved with the prayer is not accessible by him , in other words he does not know what words are being said until he hears the words . He does not think the words . The Holy Spirit has control . He is the vessel .
My spirit has control of my prayer language because I am not possessed of the Holy Spirit of God to pray to God.
I am yielded to the holy spirit of 'Christ in me'....AND..... the holy spirit of Christ in Jesus.

1CO 6:17 But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit. LOWER CASE. "one spirit" not two Spirits. And this time the translators interpreted "spirit" right.

As a Christian when we pray with the spirit it is through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit , it can be no other way ! Don't you agree ?
Again this is being said as instructions to the people receiving this letter , things were not being done in proper order there .
Now you don't capitalize the "spirit" you say we are praying with. Through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. I agree the power was a supernatural spiritual gift FROM the Holy Spirit, for our spirit. because it was POWER FROM The Holy Spirit given unto us. And that's ALL scripture says the Holy Spirit was going to give.

LUK 24:49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.
ACT 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: .....

The "promise of the Father" wasn't The Holy Spirit of God, or 'a prayer language', it was supernatural "power" from The Holy Spirit given to us.
Man is spirit , soul and flesh , all of mankind . I do not know what you mean by "unholy spirit " in fact I did not find that expression in the KJV . You will have to clarify this for me what you are seeking .
You're right I made up an 'unholy spirit'. OK a spirit which needs to be saved in every human. What was wrong with that spirit which the Holy Spirit put into you at conception? I don't really expect an answer here WICK. This is a volatile topic.
Do you pray in tongues ?
Absolutely, for 55 years. How long have you been a born again believer? And how long after did you receive your prayer language?

I will have to ruminate some more on what was said before these quotes , but I will talk about these below .
OK a spirit which needs to be saved in every human.
The human as a unit is born again we can not separate our flesh , spirit and soul as distinct items , they are interconnected in how they operate . Surely God can separate them but not us .
What was wrong with that spirit which the Holy Spirit put into you at conception?
Nothing . "Sin nature" or "original sin " aka inherited sin is a fabrication of Augustine of Hippo .
We are born into a fallen world full of sin and sinners and we will sin so of course we need a Savior .

Absolutely, for 55 years. How long have you been a born again believer? And how long after did you receive your prayer language?
I was given the gift of tongues before I left the front of the church where I was born again . As I stood there after I got up from kneeling I felt words trying to come out of my mouth that were NOT words of my thoughts and I was shocked and did not let the Holy Spirit give the utterance , after I understood not much later I did of course let the Holy Spirit give the utterance . 42 years .
I understood later why I received the Gift that way , I had requested to have a relationship with God like my wife had before I was born again , she had the gift of tongues and was a Christian years before our marriage . God granted my request but I did not really understand what I asked for , LOL !

Are you able to interpret or understand the words you are praying ?
eg "Heavenly Father, please help me to spread the Gospel to those who need to hear it "
or is it more like :-
"ajdfkajdf UAFOIaf AIer oIASDjasfi ljlAUajoiQJKas lajdluAS " ?

A lot has changed but a lot of people do not like change within Christianity. But unless Yeshua would have started His ministry in Eden.....a lot has changed.

Then the changes that occurred with Christianity after the biblical era are the ones that cause conflict and confusion. Conflict and confusion because some like some of the changes but don't like some of the other changes. It is not a matter of biblical guidance, but rather most of the time just personal option. So make your choices of the things that were biblically supported and which ones are not now.

Early Christianity still treated women as property....Father chose their daughter's husband and the groom paid for the wife.

No wedding ceremony required in the Bible to be married.

No process for divorce in the New Testament.

The scriptures never put an end to polygamy. New Testament Christians could have multiple wives.

The scriptures never put an end to concubinage. Fathers could sell their daughter as a sex slave....concubines....even against their will.

The scriptures never put an end to slavery. So Christians could have slaves.

And yes women were to be silent in church and were not allowed to speak in tongues. (I guess they would punish God if He spoke thorough a woman.)

The early Christians worshipped on the Jewish Saturday Sabbath.

Now if we still followed these biblical guidelines it would make for pretty weird religion that really is not reflected in the Catholic Church or most Protestant denominations.

Now for me women are equal members in Christianity and eligible for all religious positions including pastors and priests.

Marriages are a team with two mules pulling the cart.

I worship with many denominations, but my favorite churches are Holy Ghost churches and most the time it is the women that speak in tongues and it is a blessing.

"""and most the time it is the women that speak in tongues and it is a blessing."""
Is the audience or tongue speaker able to understand or interpret what they are saying ?
If yes, can you give an example ?

1. Acts 2:1–13 (Day of Pentecost)

  • At Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descends on the apostles, and they speak in other languages ("tongues") that are understood by people from various nations. This is often seen as a reversal of the Tower of Babel story (Genesis 11) and marks the birth of the church.
  • Purpose: To proclaim the gospel to diverse people groups and demonstrate the Spirit’s power.

2. Acts 10:44–46 and Acts 19:1–7

  • Tongues also appear when Gentiles receive the Holy Spirit (Cornelius’ household) and when believers in Ephesus are baptized in the Spirit.
  • Purpose: To confirm that the Holy Spirit is given to all believers, Jews and Gentiles alike.

3. 1 Corinthians 12–14 (Primary Teaching)

The Apostle Paul addresses speaking in tongues in depth in 1 Corinthians, especially chapters 12–14:

  • 1 Corinthians 12:10, 28–30: Tongues are listed as one of the spiritual gifts, but not all believers have this gift.
  • 1 Corinthians 13:1: Tongues without love are "a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal."
  • 1 Corinthians 14:1–40: Paul regulates the use of tongues in worship:
    • Edification: Tongues are for personal edification unless interpreted (14:4–5).
    • Interpretation: If tongues are spoken publicly, there must be an interpretation so the church may be edified (14:13–17).
    • Order: Only two or three should speak in tongues in a service, one at a time, and with interpretation (14:27–28).
    • Prophecy Preferred: Prophecy (clear, understandable speech) is preferred in church because it edifies all (14:18–19).
    • Self-Control: God is a God of order, not confusion (14:33, 40).

4. Mark 16:17

  • In the longer ending of Mark (though some manuscripts omit it), Jesus says that believers will "speak in new tongues."
  • This is often cited as evidence for tongues as a sign accompanying believers.

5. Romans 8:26–27

  • Paul mentions that the Spirit intercedes for us with "groans that words cannot express." Some associate this with a form of prayer in tongues.

Key Themes and Interpretations:

  • Private vs. Public Use: The Bible distinguishes between tongues as a private prayer language (1 Corinthians 14:2, 4) and a public gift requiring interpretation.
  • A Sign for Unbelievers? In 1 Corinthians 14:22, Paul says tongues are "a sign for unbelievers," but in context, he seems to mean that unintelligible speech may harden unbelievers unless interpreted. Prophecy (clear preaching) is better for conversion.
  • Not the Greatest Gift: Paul emphasizes that love and prophecy are greater than uninterpreted tongues (1 Corinthians 13–14).
