They thought it was an honor to be killed for Christ-- a martyr..---- Many were apostles- who heard Jesus teach. No scribes there! Then the EFC's were right behind them in later years.

What happened to our courage and faith?

While I didn’t read what @Button said, I recognize the Christian command of loving our enemies to be individual, while giving to Caesar is for collective benefit, including killing enemies of the State.
