Years ago I bought one at some hippie bike store down in Carrboro. It's pedal-assistance rather than a pure electric bike, but that's fine. The company that made it is out of business now, so it's hard to get parts for. I was able to find a spare battery on the internet. I found a spare charger that was allegedly compatible with this brand, but it didn't work. The last time I used that bike, I got a flat about 10 miles from nowhere, and my stepson had to come get me in his truck. While worrying about "running out of gas", I forgot basic bike preparedness learned from using a bike as my main form of transportation in Colorado - always bring a couple of spare tubes, tools, and a hand pump. I know better than that.
The range of the e-bike is about 27 miles with level-2 pedal assistance. Level-1 is about the effort of pedaling a standard bike, but the range is in the low 30s. Level 0, you're pedaling a 60-pound bike and you feel it. For a 20 mile trip, I'd have to carry either the charger or the spare battery.
The real reason I haven't tried e-bike commuting: Our city has a nice north-south off-road bike trail that I could use and avoid the risks of automobile traffic, but it runs through some bad neighborhoods. We've had a few robberies along the trail, and a shooting about 3 weeks ago made the 11:00 news. I have a Concealed Carry permit and a few tools I could carry for that contingency, but my workplace is a posted no-firearms zone; being caught with a weapon in the building gets me fired and arrested, in no particular order. The common wisdom is, if you're not comfortable going someplace unless you're packing, you need to ask yourself if you REALLY need to be there.
(Of course, these days that includes just going to the grocery store.)
