Brothers and sisters in Christ,
I am a Christian man who deeply desires to be married someday. I have been praying earnestly for God to lead me to the woman He has ordained for me. By His grace, I have been able to remain sexually abstinent for several months at a time—sometimes six months, sometimes even as long as eight months.
However, there comes a point when the battle against sexual temptation becomes very intense on the sixth or eighth month. Sadly, instead of standing firm, I give in and commit sexual sin. Each time this happens, I repent sincerely and seek the Lord's forgiveness, but I also find myself wondering how to overcome this recurring struggle.
I know that God is faithful, and I truly desire to walk in purity and honor Him with both my body and my heart. I am not looking to justify my sin, but rather to seek biblical wisdom, encouragement, and practical counsel from fellow believers who may have walked a similar path.
How have you remained steadfast in seasons of prolonged waiting? What Scriptures, disciplines, or godly practices have helped you resist temptation while trusting God's timing for marriage? Does this succumbing to temptation prolongs the time of me meeting that woman?
Thank you, and may the Lord bless you all.
I'm going to presume that you are one of our younger brothers.
With that in mind, young man, if you can go as much as eight months without some kind of release, then I guarantee you, you are doing far better than many of your elders.
Fornication is indeed sexual sin, in all it's many varieties of expression. Masturbation however, for the sole purpose of release, does not fall into this category, though I am certain there will be many here who vehemently disagree with me.
As long as you aren't using pornography, chasing hookers, or having meet ups on tinder, you'll be fine. And I should probably add, using your imagination to target a particular female or even one conjured up in your head. Get your release, make it quick and carry on serving and loving and praying and all those other things you do in Christ.
God loves you. He is mindful of your frame. He hears your prayers for a wife, and unless He has something else greater in store for you, is now preparing one.
But I would encourage you, with the same or more earnestness that you have asked for a wife, that you would rather seek His perfect will for your life. You sound like just the kind of man that God could use greatly, with or without a companion.
Be at peace my brother. Trust me when I say, if you have the kind of heart for God that enables you to endure many months of chastity, you're probably much further along in your walk with the Lord than many who are giving advice to you in this thread.
Be strong in the Lord. Be grateful for the grace He has given you to endure temptation. But be ever humble about it, and flee from pride like you would a lion nipping at your heels. Pride is the devil's sin. Rejoice in your victories, every one, but give the credit where it's due. God is your Rock and your Salvation.
Much love, much peace
