Thank you @Debp for assisting in getting this started … I hope in this thread @Mancunian and I can delve into the pros and cons of being an Atheist rather than a Christ follower. In another thread on proof of God’s existence, I mentioned 4 categories of proofs that were compelling to me and provided a vid on the provocative idea that math proves God exists.

@Mancunian made some posts to a blocked poster morally objecting to the Christian God. Of course, all that is the back story. @Mancunian said his wife was looking at him side ways and he’d watch the long math vid this week. I look forward to a very thought provoking conversation. @Mancunian describes himself as a free thinker, I believe and look forward to getting to know him better and how CyB may meet his needs - even if he doesn’t align theologically with me (and others here) 100%.

I was raised as a Christian and attended Church of England schools, I was a regular at Sunday school in my youth and enjoyed being a part of that.

My journey into none belief started when I stopped listening to what I was told, and read the Bible from front to back.
The old testament is very unpleasant in parts and it got me thinking about God's morality....
The new testament although less offensive still rang alarm bells, I found it to be contradictory.
I struggled with the concept of sacrifice being the only way that God could forgive.

Talking to (some) Christians makes my none belief stronger.

My thoughts on the video...
Although I have to admit that laws of mathematics are definitely not man made, it doesn't lead me to automatically think that the God of Christianity is responsible for them.

I think that I've already said on this forum that there could well be a creative force that is/was responsible for them, that's fine by me...
The problem's arise when people give the creative force or God or whatever you want to call it a personality. They claim to know God and his/her/it's likes and dislikes, it's plans for us etc.

Outside of the Bible I find no evidence for the Christian God and that's concerning considering he supposedly wants a relationship with me.

Hi Mancunian,

I too was wanting to converse with you. As I recall, I as a Christian could not partake in some other thread.

Life in this world is very strange to say the least, and the fact that we are born into it with only hearsay to go by, does indeed present its own problems. Sometimes especially the religious hearsay.

I have a place to start that I like to refer to, if it helps:

Imagine that we are all born into a large building or room and no one has ever been outside or seen what is outside. Imagine that in the large room are different people, some born leaders, some followers, some scientists, some learned, some philosophers, some teachers, some mere workers, and many more. Some with big ideas of what is outside beyond the big room--none of whom have ever been or seen outside.
How then would anyone actually know anything about what is outside? Sure...scientists, the learned, and philosophers could speculate and even extrapolate based on their great knowledge of what was inside. But none of them would actually know. How then would any actual knowledge of what is outside ever come to be "known" inside?
The only way...is if the knowledge were to come in from the outside.
And that--is what the Bible includes. Yes, there is a bunch of infighting (within), but there is a reason. Imagine, or suppose someone popped up and claimed-- "I have heard from the outside...and it is this, this, and this. I tell you the truth!" Can you imagine a fight breaking out? I sure can--in fact there are a bunch of those fights right here on Christianity Board!
But I couldn't imagine any of that...unless it happened to me--and it did. Like many in the history of the world, God has actually opened up a view to what is outside--beyond all that we can otherwise know--and we to whom He has, are witnesses. And the Bible is a collection of such witnesses down through the ages.

What about everyone else? Well, not knowing is a test, a way of dividing good from evil amongst the overall mix. It's simply a choice and which we gravitate to. That's it! And then, yes, there is a bunch of information to be learned and understood. But you gotta know, if any of that is true...the answers are not just given out to those leaning the wrong way. That should make sense.

Anyway, I really didn't want to butt into Wrangler's conversation with you. So, let me know it you want to talk further. I am sure if you quote and comment or have questions of others, Wrangler will not object, but may have his own things to say and chime in.

All the best to you!

Hey why dont you pitch in instead of just observing, this is not amusement it is serious.. just saying. ill lookinto this forum member and will ba back and try help here. as should you
Welp? Kinda goes like this:
Commenters are going to comment and Mancunian is going to reply. And more commenters are going to comment and Mancunian is going to reply to them as well.

Is good to see Mancunian in here. Kinda shows he's still interested KINDA!
He just hasn't come to the realization that this Christian God he so refutes placed him PRECISELY where He WANTED him!
Not only where he was born, but also WHEN he was born of woman! (NO OFFENSE to your Mother intended!)
And when he's done with all the reasons for not believing in the Christian God, and some he hasn't gotten to as yet?
This Christian God will STILL be there!

I WAS gonna run down how I, like he, was rather brought up in similar households blah, blah, blah.

But as this particular point in time? Mancunian is pretty much the mindset of the Sadducee's way back when Jesus was around mankind.
Kinda also like Nicodemus! "How can a man enter back into his mother's womb to be born again?"

I believe he has read the Bible from cover to cover! And like myself? Probably didn't or doesn't understand a lot of it.
If he would read the Bible again and simply "ask" this Christian God for understanding of what he's reading?
Because this Christian God will NEVER leave nor FORSAKE him IR-REGARDLESS of what his views and perspectives are, or at?
MAY just come away with a different point of view.
He's just not ready.......yet!

Do you think that I just haven't bothered to try?
I used to pray, I've asked for signs, I attended church....
In the end it just felt like talking to myself, I got the feeling that it was me that was the problem, I was doing something wrong... Not getting anywhere because of me not God.

You are correct, I've read the Bible and do find it confusing and contradictory, that's partly why I can't subscribe to Christianity any more.
Being on this forum has reinforced that, when I see all the different opinions of Christians themselves, in fighting about certain beliefs, and sometimes chasms between those opinions.

And that's just Christiansity....
When I look at other world religions, they all make different claims, there's in fighting between various sects and no clear general consensus about what God is/wants.

I'm of the opinion that there probably was a creative power, whether that power is interventional or never has been is debatable.
I've never sensed it personally so until I do, I'll take it that it doesn't exist anymore or is not interested in it's creation.

Hello @Mancunian

I like you, in my youth did not believe in God at all, I was born in the province of Quebec Canada my family members were catholic like the majority of French Canadians. I knew there was something out there but cold not put my finger on it so I became an avid reader of ALL I could find on the world's religions except Catholicism because it made no sense for me and I read and consulted thousands of books, I went deep in study of philosophy, science and religion trying to find why we existed and many many years later I decided to Finally Open a Bible. I have a french edition that is very close to the original texts. just before that, like you in university I saw we were created, the laws of thermodynamics are clear, chaos cannot produce Order and even less an order capable of sustaining life and even less reproduce itself. I will not speak more of this as you saw this too ( from a post I read from you elsewhere on this forum)

Like you I saw all kinds of contradictions but I persisted trying to understand what I was reading and I SAW that the words in our bibles could not be written by man because of the immense infinite wisdom they contained. I will add also that I saw a continuity throughout the bible like it was the same author ( there are a few exception) I knew then the bible has one author and that there is a PLAN in place for salvation. But why save us warmongering humans capable of such atrocities?

GOD MADE US IN HIS IMAGE at the very beginning of the bible is is stated, mankind is to become part of GOD's family.

Everyone? NO. the bible teaches we have choices to make and God Himself calls us personally according to his own will. Some respond and some do not because GOD gives us a choice to become like Him or Not.

the core of the Bible, the centre of it all Is Jesus Christ, It is by him and Him alone that all is possible without him we can achieve noting except decide to follow him.

Everything came together for me when I read JOHN chapter 17 in that chapter, a prayer of Jesus to God the Father explains what we shall become, part of GOD's family. it is then Than I knew God existed and why we are here on this earth and what we could become. while reading chapter 17, in a flash, my spirit was lifted upwards, I was surrounded by a divine light and could see myself from above I felt a divine presence and at that moment I was called and baptized by the Holy Spirit. Therefore I urge you to receive the words spoken by Jesus, I mean His words and His alone and it might change your life forever. But know the path in truth is not an easy one.

Ill stop here for now and let you ask questions if you have any. I do not claim to have answers for everything, far from it, only GOD Himself has these but ill do my best.

On that I wish you well and am looking forward to chat with you if you want to.

If you can see the wonder of creation and how impossible that such a thing could exist....together with us having life and a body that automatically breathes with a heartbeat that doesn't stop...you begin the realize that the human mind is very limited in understanding the immensity of the WHY we exist at all. The truth is far beyond the capacity of a human mind. No one can know the purpose of creation just by looking at it.

God is silent. He hides Himself. Why? We are on trial here...not God. We are permitted many excesses of foolishness based on our free will. Beyond that, we have bodies that want to sin. That very fact proves our own depravity when it comes to NOT doing as we somehow know that we ought to.

Unless we become wicked...we each have a conscience. We care about others in a natural way, unless our consciences become singed.

Why do we love? It is because we are put here on earth to learn about love....to love others. And ultimately to love God.

The greatest commandment is to love God whom we don't see. There is a GREAT reward for doing so. God is looking for faith as a foundation for those who would live in an eternity with God.

God is merciful....but beyond that God is elevating those who He feels MERIT eternal life. Those whose faith and behaviour are linked to God.

The biggest issue in my view is the fact that free will upsets the message of the truth...so that even if a person wants to join the faithful ones, there is massive confusion of what that is.....and that is because evil ALSO exists in the world.

The greatest calling in this world is to overcome evil with good. Even atheists like the idea of superheroes who defeat evil.

So we are caught in a narrative that few can see with any clarity. Those who see with clarity are God's prophets. Those who do rightly in love towards others are the righteous...regardless of their beliefs. Mercy on the righteous, and glory among the saints (prophets)

If you receive a prophet in the name of a prophet you get a share in their reward.

if you receive a righteous man in the name of a righteous man, you get mercy from God.

Live so as to get God's mercy.

as usual i see lots of mentioning of perhaps some good works , buT not word one ABOUT HAVING TO FIRST
BELEIVE ON JESUS CHRIST so as one can RECIEVE the MERCY of GOD .
You really think man can do good enough and be good enough, WITHOUT FAITH .
not gonna happen epi . So i had to come on here and let this other person know
OF the absolute dire need TO FIRST BELEIVE ON JESUS , And then let us do the good works HE taught and commanded us
TO DO . but without FAITH EPI , wont no man or woman be pleasing GOD . And GOD testified ON CHRIST JESUS .

I don't think an atheist will see the logic or love from the rantings of a religious extremist who has thrown out reason and understanding.

The truth is not 2 dimensional. One must adapt the truth to the situation. There is a time for putting one's faith in Christ. But if a person doesn't believe in a personal God...how does your ranting NOT turn them off further?

The number one thing that turns people away from Christ...are those who claim to be Christians. False advertising has a very great effect....as it creates doubt, not faith.

well he sure wont see it from a false gospel epi . An extremist you say . perhaps making me seem to you
as no less dangerous than maybe say Isis or etc .
YALL BEING GROOMED for the betrayal of the true saints . Dont weep for me epi , weep for yourselves .
