Romans 8:9, in Ephesians 1:13-14, Paul says that when you believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is a pledge of our inheritance, sealed, pledged, and in 2 Corinthians 1:22, Paul says God sealed you and gave you the down payment of the Spirit in your heart, a down payment. In the ancient world, when you made a deal, you put down a deposit, a portion of the full price given in advance as a guarantee that the rest was coming. Consider a buyer placing coins on a table and the seller knowing the deal is done, because the deposit is sitting there, and Paul says, the Spirit is is exactly that. The Spirit in your heart is God’s down payment on everything he has promised. The Spirit is the guarantee that the inheritance is real, that the resurrection is coming, that the story does not end in the grave.

You are not hoping against hope, you have a deposit, you have been sealed and here is the detail that should stop you cold, that seal is how God says this one is mine. That is what it means to be God's, not that you earned your way into his family, that he marked you as his own. Have you received Christ, because the Spirit of Christ is given through faith in Christ, Paul is not describing a ladder you climb, he is describing a gift you receive. Here is the most surprising thing in Romans 8:9, the very confession that Jesus is Lord is itself the Spirit’s work, 1 Corinthians 12:3, no one can say Jesus is Lord but by the Holy Spirit, if you can say those words and mean them, if Jesus is Lord is not just a phrase, but a confession of your heart, that confession did not come from your own flesh, it came from the Spirit.

The Spirit is already at work in the very faith you have, you are not trying to get the Spirit by being good enough, the Spirit is the one who gave you the faith in the first place. And that changes everything about how you read Romans 8:9, because Romans 8:9 is not a weapon, it is a description, it is Paul telling you who you are if you are in Christ. And if you are not sure you are in Christ, if you have never actually turned to him, then the door is not locked, the Spirt of Christ is not something you earn, it is something you receive by faith in Jesus. The gospel has always been the same, Christ died for your sins, Christ rose again and everyone who believes in him receives the Spirit, that is the promise and the Spirit is the proof.

That’s true but there is more to the gospel than that. Jesus preached the gospel before he said anything at all about his death and resurrection (Mark 1:14-15; Luke 4:43). Why is that not included in your presentation?

The prophets promised a new heavens and a new earth, a place with no more tears, no more death, no more mourning, a place where the garden is restored and the rhythm God built into the beginning carries on into the end. Paul takes that cosmic promise and presses it down onto a single person, if anyone is in Christ, that person is a new creation, the same God who is making all things new is making you new, you are not a side project of the new creation, you are a preview of it.

So, here is the truth that sets you free, you are not a failure, because you still struggle, you are a new creation who is still being renewed, the struggle does not cancel the identity, the identity is what makes the struggle survivable. You are not fighting to become new, you are fighting from already being new. And this is where the story gets even bigger, because the new creation was never a New Testament afterthought, it was God’s plan from the very beginning, Paul did not invent this idea, he was reading the prophets and the prophets have been saying it for centuries, Isaiah 43:18-19. Centuries before Paul, God was already saying, I am going to do a new thing, the old things do not live there, something new is coming and then Ezekiel takes it even further.

I think there is people who don't realize this. Faith is a gift. Jesus paid to the Father that Peters faith would not fail.

The word “whoever” still echoes today, it stands as an open door, not a pressure tactic, God does not force belief, love invites and belief becomes the point, where divine grace meets human response. Jesus speaks of perishing, a word many prefer to skip, redefine or ignore, but Jesus did not avoid it, because ignoring danger is not love, warning is part of rescue. To perish is not merely to cease existing, it is to be separated from the life God intended, it is the slow erosion of purpose, peace and hope, culminating in eternal separation from God. Jesus spoke of this not with delight, but with urgency, John 3:16 is not a threat, it is a lifeline, it assumes danger, because danger is real.

The future ahead and yet, everlasting life is often misunderstood as something that begins after death, Jesus meant far more than that. Eternal life in the language of Jesus is not defined by duration alone, but by relationship, it is life connected to God, life as it was always meant to be, it begins the moment belief takes root, it reshapes the present before it secures the future, everlasting life is not waiting for heaven, it is heaven beginning in the human heart.

Luke 15:11-32, that is why Jesus said the tax collectors and prostitutes were entering the Kingdom ahead of the Pharisees, not because their sin was smaller, because their awareness of their sin was bigger and awareness is the door to repentance and repentance is the door to the feast. Be honest, really honest, which son are you? Maybe you are the younger brother, maybe you are in the far country right now, maybe you have taken everything God gave you, the gifts, the opportunities, the relationships, the calling and you have spent it all on things that left you empty. Maybe you are sitting in your own pigsty right now and the shame is so heavy that you cannot imagine standing up, let alone going home. Your father is watching the road right now, he has been watching it since the day you left.

Your father is not standing with his arms crossed, he is not preparing a lecture, he is not making you wait, the moment he sees you on the horizon, dirty, broken, ashamed with your pathetic rehearsed speech, he will run, he will sprint, he will hike up his robes and sacrifice his dignity and crash into you with a love so violent that it will knock the speech right out of your mouth. You do not have to clean up first, you do not have to prove you have changed, you do not have to earn your way back, you just have to turn around, that is all repentances is, turning around and the father will cover the distance.

Maybe you are the older brother and honestly that is the harder diagnosis, because the older brother does not think he has a problem, maybe you have been in church for years, decades, maybe you have served faithfully, tithed consistently, volunteered sacrificially. Maybe you have done everything right and maybe deep down in a place you do not let anyone see, you are angry, angry that it does not seem to count, angry that people who showed up at the last minute seem to receive the same grace you had to work for, angry that God’s love does not seem proportional to your effort.

If that is you, you are always with the father, everything he has is already yours, you do not need to earn it, you never needed to earn it and the reason you are angry is not because the father is unfair, it is because you have been living as a slave in a house where you were always a son. Put down the ledger, stop counting, come inside, the feast is for you too, it always was.
