When approaching this phrase/verse...one must think on...
"What is it to delight?" ha!
''....to delight in a sunset, a flower, my doggy, my baby,
a person, my food, the morning air after a rain..." hmmm...
What does delight even mean?

This is part of the contemplation one ponders inside with eyes closed ...
Then, "in the Lord". How does one do that!?
One may go to...." I will delight and appreciate and find the beauty and joy in His creation and all His creatures today and every day."
Ok...and this goes on for awhile happily sitting in silence in contemplation.

At one point...what will come up is...what is the Lord.
Delight in Him? What does this really mean....it didn't say ...'Delight in His creation, after all?
It says, Delight IN the Lord.....'IN" ? What does that mean?

And so forth...just to get you started.

Do not answer here....this is for you ...do you take an hour a day to sit and
be still? Imagine sitting with just this one verse in contemplation for 20 minutes for a week.
Ahhhh...it's like laying on a beach. ❤️

You never responded to my post in the other thread. I don't blame you. I should have displayed more compassion considering I am no different and have been exactly where you are.

How can you delight in the Lord when you reject what He has done? How can you weep and mourn mankinds sin against Him when you refuse to acknowledge the fallen state of this world. Psalms are cries in anticipation for the resurrection of Christ...Job...Proverbs...every word of the OT is in anticipation.

Psalm 2:6-9 KJV
[6] Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. [7] I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. [8] Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. [9] Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.

How can you delight in the Lord when you refuse to acknowledge the magnitude of His love...the definition of His love??? Opposite of man's definition.

We celebrate the hero that saves the innocent in a fictional movie but refuse to stare at the resurrection where the innocent saved the sinner.

You love animals, correct? Look at the creation that you consider not in a fallen state...where nothing needs to be atoned for: the runt in the litter always is the one that gets rooted out and dies, the slowest of the herd gets picked off by the lion of prey, babies die in incubators from their mother's drug addiction...this world is groaning in travail to be delivered.

No...you have no idea the magnitude of the LORDS love for you and the price He paid for your life. Then you would delight in the Lord for healing the breach of sin keeping you from the presence of the Father. And you would rejoice in the blood covering what you are incapable of covering yourself. He can change your perspective though. He changed mine.

very nice.

also very hard, at least at first i guess. Many ppl seem to have lost the ability to be still now; or i guess a more apt characterization is that we are never taught this now

Probably the most important question that one person can ask another is not, "Are you saved by the Blood of the Lamb?" but rather, "How is your relationship with/delight in the God that you worship at this very moment?"

The first question only requires a simple "yes" or "no" response while the second question require one to express how they are feeling about the relationship that they have with the God that they are worshipping at the time of asking the question.

The first question is demanding an answer while the second question is inquiring about the state of the person and their emotional well being.

The first question is a closed conversation, while the second question opens up an opportunity for the person asking the question to witness how they too are feeling about their relationship with the God that they are worshipping.

Do we really take the time to smell the roses with those around us and delight in all the wonders of the creator.

When I first came upon this verse...it actually was Beth Moore looking intently
into the camera, whispering with so much passion, saying the words slowly..,
Here I was a baby Christian having never heard this sentence...raised Catholic.

My nature it seems is to take one thing and think on it, ponder it from all angles.
My first thought yes ago was my adorable little white dog and I delighted in his belly
when he rolled over on my bed when I came home.." Oh boy, mom's home and she's gonna love me up! "
I delighted in his little ears and his little doggy smell. And told him.
It was then I realized...it meant the same thing about God...personally.....
intimately.
More later.
Thanks so far for all the input. :]

So then, i think when you sit with this verse...you will eventually...if
you have a mind like mine that takes things all apart to understand them..
will think, ''How the heck does someone delight in the Lord? How? Does one
do this?''
Do I open to Him? Do I sit in silence and stillness in order to receive Him in order
to delight in Him? HIM...And so on...❤️

What does delight even mean?

Simply put, delight means to be happy about.

Delight in Him? What does this really mean....it didn't say ...'Delight in His creation, after all?
It says, Delight IN the Lord.....'IN" ? What does that mean?

Simply put, take delight in His Finished Work.

You focus on Jesus and you don't receive Him if you already have Him, and where does He live? In your heart.

Psalm 37:14, Take delight in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Jesus did it all so you can get it all. Delight in what He has done, for you.

Delight in silence and stillness with just these couple of verses, delighting in what He accomplished at the Cross, and if you want, let us know what the Holy Spirit reveals to you.

2 Corinthians 5:21, God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Galatians 3:13-14, Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole." He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.

Isaiah 53:5, But he was pierced for our transgressions,
he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.

Hello there,

You have said that you do not want an answer from your readers, but ask that we spend time contemplating this glorious little verse.

'Delight thyself also in the LORD;
and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart.'

(Psa 37:4)

So I will. x

First of all I will look at the context: for that little word, 'also', is catching my eye, indicating that the words of this verse are connected to what has come before it, which will determine what it means to 'delight ... ... in the Lord (Jehovah) ... ,' within this context.

Then I shall look at the ways that this word, 'delight' is used elsewhere in Scripture to see how the Holy Spirit uses it, regardless of it's dictionary or concordant definitions, for that is what matters, isn't it? Not how man uses it, for the Holy Spirit is it's Author, regardless of who held the pen at any given time. This glorious written Word, is His 'sword', which He alone has the authority or ability to wield.

Praise God!

In Christ Jesus
our risen and glorified
Saviour, Lord and Head.

Hello @M.H.

I don't know how justified we are in taking verses like this and applying them to ourselves. For this verse is part of a psalm with a context which is not related to the Church, but to Israel, and their Messiah.

Psalm 37:4

Yes, M.H, especially as there is a promise attached - 'He shall give Thee the desires of thine heart'

:)
But what if we, the Gentiles, the people supposedly of the New Covenant rather than the carnal children of Jacob[Israel] have as the desires of our heart that which God desires that we desire?

"Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart." Psalm 37:4

"Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts." James 4:2-3

If we ask and our asking is not amiss, then are we not lining up with this verse which makes the OT and the NT the same in the eyes of God?

"For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:" Rom 7:22

"And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it." John 14:13-14

When we ask "in His name" is this not the "inward man" [new born again man], the one who is asking?

"Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:" Col 3:9-10

And the end result would or should be the same as with Psalm 37:4 because our desire is become equal to His desire for us.

Thank you Amadeus. In the Church which is His Body, where distinctions of race no longer apply, we are of one mind and purpose with our Head, Christ Jesus, our risen Lord. We are one with Him and He is our desire.

I have never questioned the application of Psalm 37:4 before this, but I am glad that M.H. has brought it to our attention, for I have now acknowledged it's context, and to whom it applies. and can leave it there, where it belongs, and simply rejoice in God's provision.

This verse, like that which you have raised, Amadeus, from John' s gospel, (14:13-14), were particularly applicable to those to whom they were addressed, at the time they were spoken, with a specific purpose, for which they were Divinely equipped, and the promise attached was for them to rejoice in.

We have the promise of life in Christ Jesus and are already blessed with ALL spiritual blessings in Him, what more do we need?

I can still lie under the stars and delight myself in the God and Father of ourLord Jesus Christ, Who has so closely identified us with Christ Jesus our risen Lord, that we are where He is, at God's right hand in the heavenlies, in Him, in spirit, NOW.

I can therefore look at the developments in world affairs from a great height, and thereby get them in perspective: and praise God that His will, will be done, and be at peace.

Praise His Holy Name!
