Should it be one or the other rather than both since our God is a "consuming fire"?
God is a "consuming fire" to His enemies, not to His children.

For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest... But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels... (Heb 12:18,22).

And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ (2 Thess 1:7,8).

Agreed, but nonetheless He is "fire". He is unto His children as the fiery furnace was unto the three Hebrews who were thrown in... He only consumes that which is not good.

My point was it is not to be a choice between a fire eternally and a Life eternally. We should have both eternally.

I don't believe in eternal fire.
That means that you do not really believe the Bible. You just pick and choose what suits you. And it is not Annihilationism vs Traditionalism but Annihilationism vs Bible truth.

Do you realize that if there is no eternal Lake of Fire, there would be no need for the Gospel? Everyone would go on their merry way to *destruction*, knowing that it simply means extinction (just like the dinosaurs).

Luke 3:16 John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
This has been interpreted in two ways, and possibly both may be correct.

1. The tongues of fire which came upon the apostles and disciples in the upper room on the day of Pentecost.

2. The fiery judgments which come down upon the enemies of Christ (when God's judgments come upon the earth and at the second coming of Christ), as well as the fires of Hell for those who are not in the Lamb's Book of Life ("fire unquenchable").

The second interpretation would correspond to the words of John the Baptist: Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable. (v 17).

So for those who believe in the false idea of Annihilationism: Why would the fire be "unquenchable" when the souls and spirits are supposedly extinguished and rendered extinct?

And this is not the only Scripture that speaks of eternal fire.

If you understand scripture, then you know there is the kingdom of Heaven and the lake of fire (hell).

Everybody knows how to read here....but the question is about understanding the text without any religious preference or prejudice. And maybe perhaps an actual intimate relationship with the Lord????

I don't believe in eternal fire. I believe immortality is given to those in Christ only.

Read LuftWaffle's post on WCF. If we only took time to study, imagine what we can learn..
Perhaps we could learn a lot and understand nothing at all:

"And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh." Ecc 12:12

Without being led by the Holy Ghost will we not fall blindly into a ditch?

"But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you." John 14:26

I spent a few years in college learning things. Later God drew me to Him and I had to unlearn many things that I was carrying from my college days.

I understand that there is a difference between the lake of fire and hell. And that this is the final destination for those who are judged.

And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
