The Testing of Job

Job is tested proving his faith just as all of God’s elect are. Did God have to see if He was correct in calling Job a perfect and upright man? Of course not, but Job needed to know it.

Job belonged to God. Job 1:8 And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?

1 Pet 1:7 That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:

Our Father only sees Christ in us when He looks on us, but to become victorious over the world in our walk with Him we need to learn just who we are in Christ.

Job 23:10 But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.

It is God working in our lives to will and to do of His good pleasure Php 2:13, and with that in mind we read in Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

Also, his friends needed to know it. They are typical of many Christians who judge their brethren very negatively when those brethren are faced with major disasters in their lives.

The automatic assumption is (and was) that God will never send disasters into the lives of those who are faithfully serving Him, and that only the wicked face misfortune. But Job and other Scriptures show us that the righteous suffer more in this life than the unrighteous, and that suffering is a test of their faith.

Ain't it the truth? Now Jesus knew all, and yet the experience benefited Him.
Heb 5:8 Though He (Jesus) were a Son, yet learned He obedience by the things which He suffered;
Heb 5:9 And being made perfect, He became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey Him;

I have always thought that ' his friends ' should be looked at and reflected on. How many times, when others around us have been going through things, do we say and do some really unhelpful things - I know I have , and I have equally been on the receiving end of unhelpful words.
The very fact that we are made aware of the ' secret conversation ' between God and Satan also reveals so very much - it gives us insights into the reality that what is happening in people's lives is never just about the circumstances- and yet so often that's all we look at and weigh things ups on what we see in front of us- which is only part of the story.
The other aspect is that Job had to react to his friends words and advise ect - in the midst of suffering, and he suffered greatly, he had to ' think ' and he didn't shy away, despite the emotional impact of the circumstances - he did not run away from his friends unhelpful responses, or his wife's.( she was suffering too , and reacted in a different way )

In the end Job says: “I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: But now mine eye seeth thee. Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent In dust and ashes.” (Job 42:5–6)

From a NT understanding, Job by declaring himself righteous declared God unjust in sending his trials. We all deserve the worst and anything less is God's mercy. Jobs friends thought gain was godliness as many do today. And if Job was good, he would not have suffered the loss of all they perceived to be the tokens of righteousness.
