It is completely different. Tattooing is art, whereas cutting is not for scaring in a pattern, but for stress and pain relief.
In tattooing, skin ink is a medium: the pain subsides, whereas for cutting the pain seems to be more or less central to the experience. (If this makes sense?)

@Laish Any wisdom for us on this subject, Sir?
Humm I have to say I am not sure . It’s not exactly my opinion but is the closest answer to what I would say.
I really haven’t invested much time on the subject. I need to look at all of the scriptures about this and pray .What I recall is that the scriptures frown on the marking of the human body . We need to know the whys it is forbidden. Also why a person gets one .
Personally I don’t like tattoos. I have one . I got it before I was called to believe. It was done in pure vanity. It was a big hay you look at me thing , nothing to be proud of . Still I try not to impose somthing on a brother or sister in Christ until I see the whole picture. A answer will come after I pray and read up on it . I can’t come up with a yes or no answer now .
Hope that makes sense.
Blessings

Thanks a lot! ppl get tattoos for a huge range of reasons. My wife talked to a young lady with the whole of John 3.16 tattooed on her wrist area; it was her favorite Bible verse and mine also; and I'm sure that other conversations have also arisen because of her willingness to undergo the ink needling. It used to be very much a man thing, but now more women than men do it, in North America, at least.

(I saw a quote about how widespread it has become in the Bible Belt.)

Nah, not me. No tattoos on my skin. I can wear scripture on a T-Shirt and I do.
PS: A similar idea is faith design rings / earrings, I guess, right?

FYI: this design is probably more suited for women rather than men, although I'm sure there are suitable Christian earring designs for men also:

Seems like faith based tattoos are needled into the skin of both male and female recipients nowadays.

@Laish PS: Here is the quote I mentioned, FYI:

Around here (Bible Belt), it is common, especially among evangelical Christians, for the girls under about 40 to have religious tattoos. More do than don't, especially when you get to the under 30 crowd. I hardly know any female at church that is under 30 that does not have a tattoo.

It's certainly not necessary to do. And many Christians are satisfied without doing it. Although it is also a very widely used means to express a faith based message, especially in the Bible Belt, apparently.

There are a ton of Faith based jewelry both men & women's but if you want the scripture to be a public testimony of Faith wear it on a hoodie , shirt, or jacket or hat and go stand in line at the Bank or McDonalds. LOL!

Anyway, I think pierced ears for Christian guys can work with suitable faith based jewelry as well as for Christian women, right? just as getting tattooed for faith reasons is done confidently by both genders widely, it seems.

PS: Some Christians after their conversion manage to have an existing tattoo altered. E.g., a woman with the name of an ex-bf 'Ben' (etc.) might with the help of a good tattoo artist have 'Ben' changed to 'Bible', or 'Gary' to 'Grace', etc.

It depends of course on what the original tattoo looked like.

Did you ever consider changing yours to something specifically God-honoring?

Yes definitely a statement of adulthood
Sometimes when young ppl become adults - which for many of them involves acquiring some ink - it can be for the parent a matter of 'letting go', right?

(Sometimes hard to internalize for the parent when there are memories of a young girl or boy still fairly fresh in the mind. Maybe this was your experience also?)
