I was past 30 years old, and had gone to church all my life, when I read this verse and received the epiphany that Jesus is God. I even wrote it in the margin of my Bible. When I was young and in the Seventh-day Adventist denomination until I was 23 years old, I was taught that Jesus used to be God, but became man to die for us and stayed man - now only the Father is God. I don't know if they ever changed their doctrine on that as I've been away from it for decades.

Correct. Yet we see the Jehovah's Witnesses (and some other heterodox people) simply unable or unwilling to accept this fundamental truth. You could show them a hundred Scriptures, but they would dismiss all of them. Then there are those who believe that Jesus is Michael the Archangel, when the Bible makes it clear that Christ is the Creator, and angels and archangels are created beings.

Which also tells us that people who hold to false doctrines cling to them tenaciously no matter what the Bible says. For example Calvinists believe that Jesus is God, yet they refuse to believe that He actually died for the sins of the whole world. Only God manifest in the flesh could do that, yet there are hundreds of people who adamantly reject what the Bible says and cling to the doctrines of men.

Verse 13 could read: "our great God and Saviour".

The deity of Christ is a glorious, Scriptural doctrine. :)

One thing I find interesting and even profound; I was filled with the Spirit and saved before I knew Jesus was God! I guess you don't have to be a biblical scholar to be saved, like some who believe only Trinitarians can be saved. ;) God is bigger than that. I believe we will be surprised to see who makes it and who doesn't. God knows our heart.

You may find that God was leading you into all truth when you found that God's Son is the Saviour.

Just a few years ago I prayed that God teach me HIS meaning of His Word, that denominationalism may have perverted. Since then it is amazing how my understanding has exploded! I suggest everyone pray that prayer.

I gave up denominationalism in 1970. After that, the Spirit lead me to the full gospel and I was baptized in the Spirit in 1977. Our New Covenant is whole, nothing has ceased. I hope you realize that Cessationism is a denomination in itself and is man-made human reasoning to delete items from our covenant they don't want. I want EVERYTHING GOD HAS TO OFFER! I hope you do too. Believe me, covenant rules apply to our New Covenant just like it did in the Old. Not a jot, nor a tittle will cease until all is fulfilled (by Jesus). He ended the first covenant, and only He will end the New Covenant.
