I have the obviously missing ones somewhere, but with something like 60,000+ documents on my computer, it might take me months to find them.

I'm useless in knowing how to do thing...I don't file things..I either Bookmark them on line...or put them in my draft section...I have loads of stuff saved in my Draft Box. My daughter, and then granddaughter tried to show me how to file....but it didn't "take".... I download stuff "to file" ..then I have no idea where it went...so now I don't even try. :)

Things that I want to keep permanently in my computer from any Internet site, [such as this one] I copy and paste to a Word processing program in my computer. Once there I may identify the source and date and I may give it a title. Then I use "save as" to my the Document folder/section of my computer. Within that large compartment I have hundreds of established folders based on topic. For example nearly all copies I retain from this forum are saved in the folder entitled, Church. One subtopic under Church is Bible Related. One subtopic under Bible Related is Bible Studies. Most things from this forum go under Bible Studies. There are almost 300 topical folders under Bible Studies and many of those folders have subtopical folders within them.
When I see that a single Bible Study fits more than one topic or subtopic, I will often make a copy for each folder where it fits. This still doesn't make it simple, but it makes finding writings on a given topic findable if I really want to and know that it exists.

In addition to Bible Studies I have over 11,000 pictures saved on the computer from my whole lifetime. For my stamp collection there are over 400 folders with 3600 files for data on all of the stamps I own or have owned.

Computer space has never been a problem. I have used 113 GB [gigabytes] but have at present more than 800GB available on my desktop computer. I couldn't fill it all if I lived another 50 years. For back up I use a laptop computer. Every couple of months I try to copy everything new from my desktop to laptop so if one computer fails completely I won't lose it all.

On a daily basis when I post something or read something and I want a copy I immediately copy and paste it to a Word processing document and save it in an appropriate file under Documents or under Pictures. Once in a while when I have the inclination I spend hours browsing through my own saved documents of pictures, reading some as I go. When I am doing that I will usually also work of reorganizing things. The reorganization of course is never done. There are always many files classified under miscellaneous which I will at that time try to relocate to something more definite.

My organization allows me to access things even without an Internet connection. I also have several Bibles installed into my computer so that again I can access them without an Internet connection.

That sounds just about as complicated as my similarly convoluted filing system. I also know it is there..... SOMEWHERE.

It was hard at the first and some of the things I do now I certainly did not know how to do at the first. Now I do them regularly and don't have to concentrate to know what to do to add to a folder, make a new folder or make copies of files to place the copies in new places.

I'll grant that I started this a long time ago and anything new is always harder for me to learn now. I'm of course a youngster at 75, but still I guess one of those old dogs, but new tricks while more difficult than they once were are NOT impossible. I won't press you on it because some new projects or even things I once did in spite of interest I avoid because there is not enough time or maybe room. Every thing I do is in slow motion compared to what I remember when I was young. I am talking about the mind.

My wife asked me a few days ago to help her with a new jigsaw puzzle. I had always love working them but it simply could not be fit into my schedule and the concentration on some puzzles literally gives me a headache. I may work one again, but not before free up some time... but maybe never.

Give God the glory anyway!

Yes, this is why sometimes I simply take the time to try to reorganize things in the computer but it is a never ending process. There are always so many odds and ends so don't seem to fit in already established categories. Looking through a miscellaneous to see what's there can sometime take hours.

For example I started a folder called obituaries and deaths a few years ago. I would copy the obituary to that folder, but then as the numbers increased and it became harder to find people who had died several years ago and I divided it into subfolders, once arranged chronologically according to date of death and the other arranged alphabetically according to surname.

Since then I have inserted that whole folder of obituaries into a folder of all records of people. Other subfolders within it are births, military records, school records, marriage records, etc. You get the picture.

On another front there is the arrangement of my many thousands of pictures. Initially I simply tried to arrange them all by years or groups of years. The first go around on that took months and most of my pictures were hard copy photographs my wife stored in a very large box. which first had to be scanned into the computer. From my time in Viet Nam alone I have close to 2,000 color slides I took. Now when I spend time on it I am making folders for pictures for each person. Rather than cutting and pasting, I copy and paste so that I can find the picture either in the original total chronological arrangement for among pictures of that person alone.

A lot work? Yes, but actually I enjoy doing it so the hours spent for me are not wasted. It's like my stamp collections of over still 100,000 stamps. I have been selling them off for several years now and the collection really is smaller and I no longer collect new stamps at all. Before I send off a new book full of stamps for sale I always scan the book not only to help track what is out but also so that even for those stamps I will never see again I have pictures of them in my computer that I may also browse through when I am so inclined.

Believe me, I rarely get bored...

FYI you can get a program that downloads an entire website to your computer. Go to Free Software and Shareware - Tucows Downloads and type "website downloader" in the search box.
Thanks Wafer, but it must be baby steps for me when it comes to new things that I don't use regularly. I do well with my computer in the areas that I regularly use it, but there are things it apparently can do of which I am only vaguely aware. In any case I cannot think of a single website where I would really want the whole thing saved indefinitely. This forum is an example.

Didn't know you were a philatelist. You hide it well, and appear quite normal. LOL

Believe me I was not normal when it along with my secular job was about to cost me my walk with God... but I told that story elsewhere recently...

Oneness with God

From what was the world's most popular hobby when I began collecting stamps at about age 7 or 8 from my mother's mail to its present almost hidden presence. Once I could go into any small dime store or department store and find a stamp section, but today even in Hobby Lobby you have to look carefully to find its ridiculously small nook. I really reduced my collecting of stamps years ago to almost nothing when I retired from active employment. For a number of years now I have been gradually preparing some of the stamps and putting them up for sale through the one stamp club where I long ago purchased a lifetime membership. I used to have them send back to me the unsold stamps, but now the person controlling the general sales carried them with him to stamp shows for sale at a large discount. Once or twice a year he may send me a check large enough to take my wife out to dinner. I still enjoy sorting and mounting the stamps to be sold... even though I'll never see the original stamps again. Having so many, some of the ones I see as I preparing them are being seen for the first time. I have so many thousands of them left I really do expect to die before I run out of saleable stock.

I was both a philatelist and a numismatist in my pre-teens. But, I got over them both.
I was solid stamp collector until I went away from home after high school. I set it aside for years and then still having my old collection, my wife encouraged me to get back into it shortly after our marriage in 1972. From then on until now with reductions as noted on that other thread and here.

The coin thing never caught me like stamps did. I recall as a small boy along with my slightly older brother taking my mother's collection very old coins in a large glass jar to the grocery store and spending the entire collection on the gumball and candy machines. It was years before I realized how costly that gum and candy really had been... LOL. Now I can laugh, but my mother did not and neither did I at the time. Just dimes and nickels and pennies, right?

Really never enough order or enough time to order it all exactly as I would like. Yet, as I can I keep on working on it. My wife likes me doing it because it keeps me too busy to bug her all of the time. Years ago she used to come in and clean my study, but I got after her on that because after I spend hours sorting stamps on my table and desk I could get upset with her rearranging my arrangement to clean... Now when I get to a good stopping point, I dust and vacuum the area myself. I also like it clean, but it really makes her happy too. It has worked out pretty well.

Disk drives do fail over time. I have a collection that are too expensive to recover.
