Faith the grain of a Mustard seed
You got that mustard seed faith?

By Brother Mike

Glory to God, Mustard seed faith!!!! If I had a dime everytime someone told me I just need a tiny little faith the size of a Mustard seed, and God would answer my prayers. Well, I still would not be that wealthy but I do hear that alot.

Statements like this are meant to encourage people. I mean anyone who has gone though any tragic situation wants to believe God is going to get them through it, and at the same time have to battle those sneaky thoughts that God may just not do a thing. WE need some faith, and we hold on to that tiny mustard seed faith.

What is tiny mustard seed faith? Well, Mustards seeds are not really faith, to get all technically about it, but Jesus said if you have faith the grain of a mustard seed, then something will happen. Is that so?? Ummm.... Seems to me like we ought to find our more about this tiny faith the grain of a mustard seed. I mean Jesus could have said, "If you have the faith as big as your swiming pool, then something will happen!!" ah, bad example, some have those round plastic kid pools in their yard. Some don't even have kids yet. The point is, Jesus could have used anything to compare faith to, but he choose a mustard seed of all things.

Lets warm up the old time Machine and go back a event that occurred in the Ministry of Jesus. Here we have a devil problem and those disciples of Jesus could not cast the the thing out of this boy. Now, Jesus was not overjoyed with their failure, and did the Ghost bust'in all on his own. The disciples came to Jesus and asked him why could THEY not cast out the devil. Remember, the disciples were the best of the best at the time, yet they failed.

Mat 17:15 Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water.
Mat 17:16 And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him.
Mat 17:17 Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me.
Mat 17:18 And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.
Mat 17:19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out?
Mat 17:20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

WoW!!!! O faithless and perverse generation!!!!!! You could not cast him out because of your UNBELIEF!!!!!! Now that is Jesus talking to his own disciples in who he trained. Glad I was not there!!!

Jesus said something very interesting. he said if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, then that would be strong enough to move mountains. Pretty amazing for such small faith. You would think the disciples would have had at least that much to handle that big bad devil. I mean they have had success before, but this devil seemed extra mean. (Paul spoke in Eph 6 of classes of devils, check it out)
Still hard to believe that a tiny amount of faith was not available to the disciples, and even more amazing is that little faith could move a mountain around. Don't make a whole lot of sense if you think about it. Jesus was never happy with a little faith. There must be more to this Mustard seed business than we originally thought.

Does having mustard seed faith really have anything to do with casting out devils, does having faith change circumstances? Jesus sure seemed to think so, and I'll have to go with what he said. In fact, Jesus said if you get this mustard seed faith, then NOTHING shall be impossible to you. Glory to God!!!! That is victory in every situation, every bill paid, every sickness healed, every family restored. We should look into this more.

Let's go over to the Kingdom of God Parable. We will use the one in Mark chapter 4. As everyone knows, the Kingdom of God and the operation of faith starts with the sower sows the Word.

Mar 4:14 The sower soweth the word.

In fact, the whole chapter of Mark 4 tells us how to operate the Kingdom of God. That Kingdom is inside you and me. Jesus said in Matthew chapter 6 that if we seek the Kingdom of God and the Lords righteousness, then everything shall be added unto us. He was talking about getting our needs met, and in this case, this father had a need for his son not to be possessed by a devil. Possessed children are very hard to deal with.

In Mark chapter 4 Jesus tells us of 4 possible outcomes of sowing the Word into our heart (spirit) 3 of those outcomes are not so good, but the 4th one says that some will produce 30, 60 and 100 fold. Praise God!!!! The word produces things!!!!

Well, in the case of our devil possessed boy, we needed the Word to produce deliverance, and the disciples where not really up to the faith code. Jesus said if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed............ the devil will have to go, mountains get moved around, and nothing will be impossible to you.

Mar 4:30 And he said, Whereunto shall we liken the kingdom of God? or with what comparison shall we compare it?
Mar 4:31 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown in the earth, is less than all the seeds that be in the earth:
Mar 4:32 But when it is sown, it groweth up, and becometh greater than all herbs, and shooteth out great branches; so that the fowls of the air may lodge under the shadow of it.

There is our mustard seed. The word of God!!! Jesus said it is sown and starts out small............. At this stage, it is just a seed, and has produced nothing. Jesus told us three things that can happen to that seed.

1) Satan comes and gets it out of our heart
2) We receive it with gladness, but when persecution arises for the Words sake, we give up, or become offended
3) We do get victory in areas of our life, but the cares and look at riches and other things creep in and choke the Word. Or in this case choke our mustard plant.

And the 4th one!!!!

Mar 4:20 And these are they which are sown on good ground; such as hear the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some an hundred.

That is the place where your small mustard seed faith grows!!!!! and becomes so big that even the birds can hide in its shadows. It is also the kind of faith that will move mountains, run off devils and make anything possible to you.

You are the one that determines what God's word produces in your life. It's the law of increase.

Mar 4:24 And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given.

What measure you give the Word, will be measured back to you, in whatever area it is. Glory to God, we can get it so large like a mustard tree that it will change any circumstance your going through!!!!

So, when sickness comes around, devils haunting your house, family members gone astray, people tell you it is impossible to make it. Then just open your bible and plant the seed. Keep that Word of God in front of you and believe the Word over your circumstances. Stay away from those who have no faith, and tell you that God may not in some mysterious wisdom help you. Run from them!!!!! God's Word will fix any circumstance, and change any problem.

Things may seem like they are taking long, but Jesus promised that if you will give measure to the Word, it will be measured back to you!!!!

Now look at this!!!! A mustard tree, fully grown.

Here's something that might be a good addition to what you have already stated.

In Luke 17 Jesus does another teaching on faith.

Luke 17:5-10
One day the apostles said to the Lord, "We need more faith; tell us how to get it." "Even if you had faith as small as a mustard seed," the Lord answered, "you could say to this mulberry tree, `May God uproot you and throw you into the sea,' and it would obey you!
"When a servant comes in from plowing or taking care of sheep, he doesn't just sit down and eat. He must first prepare his master's meal and serve him his supper before eating his own. And the servant is not even thanked, because he is merely doing what he is supposed to do. In the same way, when you obey me you should say, `We are not worthy of praise. We are servants who have simply done our duty.' "

I was thinking about that one Jiggyfly.

The whole thing though starts out about forgiveness........ What Jesus had told them seemed way out there, and not the standard for treating someone who messed you up seven times in one day. They asked him to increase their faith.

Jesus also told them how to increase their faith. Plant the seed of the Word of God, guard it (Your heart) and it will grow into that large tree, being able to accomplish what it was meant to accomplish.

Now the question Jiggyfly........................Love, must have something to do with Faith, and not a feeling.

The next part about the servent...............

We are not worthy of praise. We are servants who have simply done our duty.'

What does this say to you?

We are expected to forgive someone, We are expected to build our faith. (Give room for God to give increase) That is expected??

It almost seemed that Jesus changed thoughts after the Mullberry tree, but I could use some more input on the servant part, as he did not change thoughts.

Or was Jesus answering the question about faith, but forgiveness is expected anyway?

Thank you. Be blessed!!!

Well Mike the "increase our faith" and "unprofitable servant" are in the same context, and I believe that Jesus was giving them a lesson here about faith. They inquired of Jesus "tell us how to get more faith" and by reading Jesus' response "more faith" wasn't the issue. He said that if someone had even the small amount of faith (he compared it to a mustard seed) that it could do powerful things (a tree plucked up and cast into the sea) but then Jesus goes on to tell them about the proper behavior of servant (putting self last). Remember the disciples were always arguing over who was greatest in the kingdom, who was going to sit next to Jesus' throne and so on. They seem to have selfish motive and so here they are asking Jesus for more faith. Remember Jesus said the one who is chief is servant to everyone.

Faith even very small faith (little faith) can do wonderful things when self is not in the way.

ah....... I see...... They asked about forgivness.......... You can have faith to forgive if self is out of the way. The more self in the way, the harder it becomes.

So, It does not take much, if self is out of the way.

Thank you brother Jiggyfly. Going to look at that some more.

I never saw the servant thing, as having self in the way.

Actually the first 4 verses in Luke which deal with forgiveness is possibly at an earlier time than the lesson on faith in verses 5-10. Notice the paragraphs, paragraph 1 verses 1-4 deals with forgiveness, paragraph 2 verses 5-10 deals with faith Paragraph 3 verses 11-19 the ten lepers and so on, each of a different issue or topic.

well nobody said the Bible or any books of it were written in exact chronological order. The words are God's but the writing and recollection of God's word is dependent of man. No man--except Jesus is perfect.
