I was just curious what people thought about this verse; Genesis 9:7. A lot of people seem to take it literally that we're commanded to have children. (Mormons in particular that I can think of.) However I take it as we just have a right to. However, maybe in the beginning of creation it was a commandment to go ahead and go populate the earth.

Actual "Mormon" here--
Yes, that verse is interpreted as a commandment to Adam & Eve / descendants to have children and replenish the Earth. And yes, this was God's original design and a large part of why He created the Earth in the first place.

However, that doesn't mean it should be taken to the extreme of "every single person must have children or your sinning!" No! Obviously some people simply don't even have that as an option, and some it's just not right for. It also should not be interrupted as "you must pop out as many children as you physically can!" No no! Family planning is a tool that enables parents to welcome any children in a way that is healthy for the parents & family as a whole. God doesn't order us to run faster than we can handle.

Matthew 19:10-12
19:10. The disciples said to Him, "If the relationship of the man with his wife is like this, it is better not to marry." 11. But He said to them, "Not all men can accept this statement, but only those to whom it has been given. 12. "For there are eunuchs who were born that way from their mother's womb; and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men; and there are also eunuchs who made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to accept this, let him accept it."

Go Forth and Multiply
I dunno...maybe it's referring to mathematics....do you think coming forth is the same as going forth?......at least there's no subtraction and perhaps multiply is a reference to the timber industry's ability to slice up logs?.....very thinly!

awright, awright.....enough jokes for tomorrow!

So, how does that answer my question then? (I'm not really sure what a eunuch is even though I've heard of it before. Does it refer to castaration by any chance?)

Yes, literally it refers to castration, but Jesus used it here in the passage that I quoted, once as a genetical deformation, once as a physical castration, and the last time as a deliberate spiritual choice to avoid intimacy or actions pertaining to the flesh.

Thus, there are various reasons as to why one cannot fulfill the mandate in Genesis, to go forth and multiply. Two for reasons beyond one's control, and one for noble grounds, that would most likely please God more than to fulfill the ordinance and procreate.
