Luke 17:7-10 ESV "Will any one of you who has a servant plowing or keeping sheep say to him when he has come in from the field, 'Come at once and recline at table'? (8) Will he not rather say to him, 'Prepare supper for me, and dress properly, and serve me while I eat and drink, and afterward you will eat and drink'? (9) Does he thank the servant because he did what was commanded? (10) So you also, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done what was our duty.'"

Luk 17:10 So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servant*(s): we have done that which was our duty to do.

This scripture was expressed to me about two years ago by a chap when I was going through a deep and distressing time. It hasn't left me since and each time I read or hear it it moves me deep within, even to tears.

In simple terms it says, when you see someone in need, and you help them, Great, this is what God expects of us, nothing less. Should you be rewarded, well taht is up to God, but we are supposed to do these things out of Love not looking for reward. again it is expected of us.

I view this parable from the standpoint of the servant VS the bond servant.

If you be a servant in the house of the Lord and keep his temple cleaned and sweep, after your servitude "the 7th year" you may go free or you may choose to remain. Now the Master whom you served and you enter into a contract for life, and he opens your ear against the door post His house, you then become a bond servant forever serving the Master. IMO the problem today is most never complete their servitude they never reach the point in their lives where they come before the Master and say I wish to serve you for life. They never stand against the door post because they are basically worthless slaves sitting in the shade instead of tending to the Masters kingdom. Becoming a member of the Master house means you have stood at the door post of the Master house and had your ear pierced.

This parable describes ones servitude, a bond servant has been given a right to share in all the Masters house he is a part of the estate it is his home as well.

‘We are iunworthy servants;5 we have only done what was our duty.’ ”
No ear piercing for these, but continue that you may bring honor and wealth to the Master of the house, then he shall set you free to then choose to become bonded the Master for life. Did not Moses call water from the Rock twice in the desert? Once by being struck and again he was told to speak.

The door is narrow and path less traveled is not easy but in the end you will have found life, your bond servitude becomes your peace and joy that no other can share.

Matthew 16:25
Luke 17:33
Matthew 6:25 <------- do or have you served as the Master has instructed you to serve?

Matthew 25:29-30 ESV For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. (30) And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'

Paul bitten by serpent but lived.

Acts 28:3-6 ESV When Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and put them on the fire, a viper came out because of the heat and fastened on his hand. (4) When the native people saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one another, "No doubt this man is a murderer. Though he has escaped from the sea, Justice has not allowed him to live." (5) He, however, shook off the creature into the fire and suffered no harm. (6) They were waiting for him to swell up or suddenly fall down dead. But when they had waited a long time and saw no misfortune come to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god.

Galatians 5:19-21 ESV Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, (20) idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, (21) envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Galatians 5:22-23 ESV But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, (23) gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

Interesting scripture

I haven't said you have forgotten...

Matthew 3:1-7 ESV In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, (2) "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." (3) For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord; make his paths straight.'" (4) Now John wore a garment of camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. (5) Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan were going out to him, (6) and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. (7) But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

Upon reading this parable, I have asked myself, "If doing my duty results in me being only an unworthy servant, does that mean it is impossible to be a worthy servant?" But Paul showed one way to do it in 1 Corinthians 9:1-18.

Paul recognized it was his duty to present the gospel, and therefore he could not boast in fulfilling that mission (vs. 16). But he went beyond his duty by not taking advantage of his rights as an apostle. Paul did not marry and he did not receive any monetary benefit from the churches he started. God did not lay this on him as a duty; it was his own decision. Therefore, Paul looked forward to the reward that would result (vss 17-18).

Thinking about it just now, perhaps the difference between being a worthy servant versus an unworthy servant is closely tied to being a love-slave of Jesus Christ instead of a mere slave of Jesus Christ.

Well said. That is PRECISELY correct. The text simply means that we are not even "break-even" slaves. How is ANYONE to impress or surprise a PERFECT GOD?! NO ONE can go beyond and "give him 110%," as the sports people like to say. We can't even give Him the 100% that He deserves! Even our righteousnesses are as filthy rags!

____

Shalom, AndyBern.

The word there is not "unworthy"; it is "unprofitable." The words there are "Douloi achreioi"; we would say, "We aren't even break-even slaves; we've only done what was required of us."

It seems to me that the parable is a warning not to expect that God owes you anything.

This parable reminds me that we always need to be prepared to go that extra mile for someone and not expect anything in return because our reward is with God and not with man...execute all of your ministry out into the field in and out of season... :)

Blessings!!!
