“THE SAVING WORD: ECHOES OF THE SOWER

We have seen that for Paul ‘faith’ seems to be associated more with the preaching of the gospel than with miracles, but we also observed that the Pauline emphasis on preaching has a precedent in Jesus’ teaching. In Col 1:6 Paul speaks of the word of the gospel ‘bearing fruit and growing … from the day you heard it. …’ The phraseology is reminiscent of Jesus’ parable of the sower, especially as the parable is interpreted in the Gospels in terms of ‘the word’ that is ‘heard’ and ‘bears fruit’ (Matt 13:1-23 / Mark 4:1-20 / Luke 8:4-15). Could Paul be echoing the parable in Colossians …?”

(David Wenham, Paul: Follower of Jesus or Founder of Christianity?, p. 86)
Paul sourced a great deal of his knowledge and wisdom from Isaiah as did the Master...

“Other possible echoes of the parable are in 1 Thes 1:6 and 2:13. Paul speaks in 1:6 of the Thessalonians as ‘imitators of us and of the Lord, for in spite of persecution you received the word with joy inspired by the Holy Spirit’ and in 2:13 of them accepting ‘the heard word’ (literally ‘the word of hearing’) as the word of God. The similarity to the parable of the sower, as it is interpreted in the Gospels, is notable: We find in common

* the theme of ‘the word,’ that is, the word of God at work in people,
* an emphasis on ‘hearing’ (cf. Rom 10:14-17),
* the idea of ‘receiving) the word, and
* an association of hearing with both ‘joy’ and ‘tribulation,’ the same Greek words being used in 1 Thessalonians and the synoptics.”

(David Wenham, Paul: Follower of Jesus or Founder of Christianity?, p. 87)

Paul sounds like Jesus. Paul acts like Jesus, seeing how the new believers are doing with the gospel they have heard: Is the seed planted in them producing fruit?

“The core of effective ministry in the 21st century is the same as it was in the 1st century - preaching the gospel and discipling new believers.”

Did not Christ tell us in the great commission to make disciples rather than to discipling them.

Matt 28:18-29: - 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Just as Jesus discipled His disciples, so we too, should do the same.

I’m not sure I understand the point you’re trying to make. Would you care to elaborate on it? Newbies require discipling. They have to mature in the faith.

Discipling people is usually from a position of "power" whereas making disciples is from a humble position where we come along side people to draw them to God's loving embrace.

PS: - Helping people to understand God's boundary conditions for their relationship with God does not require discipling the person, rather it requires us to demonstrate how we, as more mature Christians, embrace God's boundary conditions for our personal relationship with Him.

Thanks. A disciple is a student. My favorite Bible verse (Luke 6:40) is related to this.

My favorite Bible verse (Luke 6:40) is related to this.

Luke 6:39-40: - 39 Jesus also told them a parable: “Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40 A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher."

Attached is a PDF to provide Strongs definition of G:2675 and where else it is found in the New Testament.

I would prefer that the translated understanding provided of being "fully trained" would be better understood if it had been translated as "who is fully restored" will be like Christ.
