From my X / Twitter “For you” feed this evening -

What church rule did you grow up thinking was biblical before you discovered that it wasn’t actually in the Bible?

I think there are principles in the Bible that guide the teaching on social behavior that need to be interpreted by the Church for each new generation ... eg, using drugs, viewing pornography, listening to ungodly music, watching movies that demean Christian values, etc

Non-biblical church rules

You can't say "@#$%" or "$#*!". "Hell" and "damn" are only permissible in the biblical context (and "damn" must never be concatenated with "God"), and even though "piss" is in the KJV Bible, you cannot use it even in the biblical context.

(Note: The biblical proscription of cursing prohibits pronouncing curses, hexes, and maledictions on people. As far as I know, neither Hebrew nor Greek has the concept of "taboo" words.)

Can you elaborate on this? I thought Scripture's "filthy language" was curse words.

Ephesians has it all covered:

Corrupt versus Edyfying
  • Eph 4:29-32 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. (30) And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby you are sealed unto the day of redemption. (31) Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: (32) And be kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake has forgiven you.
Filthiness versus Thankfulness
  • Eph 5:3-5 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becomes saints; (4) Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. (5) For this you know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.

Eph 5:11-12 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. (12) For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.
