It is more like a Scooter wherein one can change gears at the handlebar except that it can carry 3 people. There is another version with a steering wheel and 7 seater. I did not drive one! so I'm guessing. :) It should be like driving a bigger size scooter where it takes double the normal size on all sides, while on the road! From what I have seen, it is never driven like a car. The drivers take curves with ease and still maintain speed. They carry double the number of passenger capacity, and still they are safe. :D When I'm driving motor bike, I find them wade through the traffic better than me ! :( Once I had to suddenly apply disk brake of my motor bike and crashed down, when an auto appeared from the opposite side on a one way road. They were 5 passengers and a driver - total 6 people but me - only 1.

It is a smart vehicle with one front wheel and two rear wheels and the people who drive them are smarter. :)

Until now I never had a chance to drive an Auto Rickshaw. My friends would say "What ! You want to drive an auto  ?" It is mostly used here as a mini-taxi. If I have a chance, I should certainly drive and see how I would feel!

Sounds fun. :D

Have you been a passenger in one before though?

Yes, I've traveled in an auto many times. The drive is not as smooth as that of a car. We can experience jolts at the bumps on the road. The vehicle sounds like a Scooter with extra bass. :)
