    Apokatastasis in the early church

I don't hold to either view so there's nothing to live with, I reckon. God's will is not fully understood or, at least, agreed upon. Of that there seems to be little doubt. :)

    Apokatastasis in the early church

It occurs to me that this would depend on what one's definition of mercy and/or justice might be. If it includes final retribution, then there's understandable tension involved between conceptual notions of the two divine characteristics. :)

    Apokatastasis in the early church

I just stumbled over this while checking on a hilarity reaction I got from @Lambano. In review (and I don't know if I'm expressing this correctly) I kind of object intellectually to explanations of things that speculate as to the mind of God, so to speak. I don't think human beings have very...

Oklahoma orders first shipment of Bibles for use in public school classrooms

Hi, BL! Hope you and yours are doing well. I don't know what concerns me more: The backlash from the left that will surely result from state-purchased Bibles in public school classrooms; Or the kooky doctrine that is bound to be taught from them by state/church-educated teachers These...

What Is The Difference Between Liberal, Conservative and Fundamentalist Christians?

It's kind of peculiar the way that scientists only take ten or twenty years to revise these estimates of how old the earth or the universe is by millions or billions of years. It makes it hard for me to suspect that they don't know an armpit from a canyon. I heard Richard Dawkins say...

Does the Bible contradict itself? - Reader Poll (and discussion)

Careful. You're venturing dangerously close to making an argument for the validity of "the spirit of the law." :P

Does the Bible contradict itself? - Reader Poll (and discussion)

You'd better believe it. What do you think defers the penalty of death from instantly occurring when people think, say, and do evil? This is called common grace, and it is not without a price (the death of Christ). Sin is always worthy of death. The Lamb was slain from the foundation of...

Does the Bible contradict itself? - Reader Poll (and discussion)

@St. SteVen If I want to have a theological discussion involving weoponized terms such as "Spirit of prophecy," "613," and "under the law," etc. (which I'm well able to do, btw), I'd prefer to do so in a thread devoted to such things, with enemies, so to speak. So, I forfeit. strs

Does the Bible contradict itself? - Reader Poll (and discussion)

I don't know right offhand if the exact idea expressed in the English phrase "the spirit of the law" is found in the best manuscript copies of Scripture we have available or not. And I don't think the true and accurate answer to that question is of any more import than a hill of navy beans, do...

Does the Bible contradict itself? - Reader Poll (and discussion)

Sometimes it's hard for me to remember that opinions are king except when it comes to "contradictions." Then it seems that words are important. I don't have anything against modern translations, in general, but digging only slightly into the Greek of Romans 7:14 renders it useless for your...

Does the Bible contradict itself? - Reader Poll (and discussion)

That's what we do here. We interpret and then equivocate, ascribe motive and values. It's all in good fun. Well, except that it makes people mad and divided. :)

Does the Bible contradict itself? - Reader Poll (and discussion)

Well, then, He at least encouraged others to break it in letter: Luke 14:2-6 — And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy. And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day? And they held their peace. And he took...

Does the Bible contradict itself? - Reader Poll (and discussion)

The poll and the answer options both overcomplicates AND oversimplifies a problem. How's that for a paradox? :P

Does the Bible contradict itself? - Reader Poll (and discussion)

I don't think it's accurate or, at least, adequate to restrict the widely orthodox concept of "the spirit of the law" to one verse. Practically the entirety of the Sermon On The Mount addresses it. :)

Does the Bible contradict itself? - Reader Poll (and discussion)

In what way then, in your opinion, is the ten commandment law spiritual? :)

Does the Bible contradict itself? - Reader Poll (and discussion)

Paul says explicitly that the law itself is spiritual (Romans 7:14), and the law that he says is spiritual is the one that says "Thou shalt not covet" (Romans 7:7). :)

Does the Bible contradict itself? - Reader Poll (and discussion)

Your reference to Mrs. White seems oddly combative. In fact, your entire, frankly, mocking demeanor throughout this thread is strangely unfamiliar to me, My Friend. I'm appealing to your sense of charity per Romans 14:1 and you appear to be appealing to a claim of martyrdom/victimhood. I am...

Does the Bible contradict itself? - Reader Poll (and discussion)

My mistake. I thought textual criticism was the topic of this thread—not the Spirit of prophecy nor the privilege of direct revelation. And I feel that the urging from the outset of those who find comfort and security in the belief of the immutability of the written word of God to simply "be...

Depressed, struggling with serving God in my Church.

These words are not meant merely to remedy anxiety over temporal needs—God actually cares more about your health and ministry than you do: Matthew 6:25-34 — Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall...

    Trump ~ guilty

Don't sweat it, Sister. Folks who like to throw terms like TDS around usually have a case of ODS—Opposition Derangement Syndrome. Your concerns were expressed in an admirably kind and gentle way and yet we have folks hollering for your head. Contrary to popular belief, there are right-wing...
