Barna Poll: Most Americans - Including Church Members - Reject the Trinity

What exactly do you want to be taught? You say 'historical orthodox trinitarianism' as if the doctrine of the trinity was well-agreed on in the past. It wasn't. It's been a point of disagreement and contention basically always. The capital-O Orthodox position is perhaps the best - that it's...

The view of the "Gentleman God" who honors human will above His own.

Yes and no. There's a set of generic expectations and then there are specific ones. We're all meant to love our neighbor, but we aren't all meant to go preach in Damascus.

The view of the "Gentleman God" who honors human will above His own.

I think it's a question of collective purpose versus individual. An individual can prioritize their individual goals over that of the group, certainly. It turns out that isn't best for the group OR the individual, but it happens often enough.

    Yahweh or Jehovah?

My post was sarcasm. That's what the "/s" at the end means. Apparently that shorthand isn't well-known here.

    Yahweh or Jehovah?

Yup. A little flatbread with babaganoush.

Was religion created to meet a human need?

A cynic might say that religion was created as a way of controlling other people. I'm not sure the cynic is always wrong, but hopefully he's wrong at least some of the time.

Was the Transfiguration a vision, or an actual appearance of Moses and Elijah?

Agreed. I think Romans 5 uses the metaphorical sense of dead - where one is outside the covenant.

Was the Transfiguration a vision, or an actual appearance of Moses and Elijah?

A lot depends on context. The Bible uses "dead" in a figurative sense as well as the literal one. Luke 9:60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.

Was the Transfiguration a vision, or an actual appearance of Moses and Elijah?

Nekros (the dead) most literally means corpses. When King Jimmy had his translation done, they made some PG-13 decisions. It could have been much more colorful. A friend used to say, "if you think about it long enough, every movie is a zombie movie." Apparently, that also applies to the Bible.

Was the Transfiguration a vision, or an actual appearance of Moses and Elijah?

They didn't get it wrong here. The translation is correct - the English active voice is used to translate Greek active voice. The issue is just that English is less precise than Greek. It doesn't have a middle voice for its verbs like Greek. So it's impossible to tell by looking at English...

Was the Transfiguration a vision, or an actual appearance of Moses and Elijah?

Others don't necessarily have to reject Damnationism (real word?) or Annihilationism to hear. They just need to not be dogmatically entrenched in one of those positions. Personally, I find Universalism attractive, and Damnationism repugnant-but-defensible. The most likely position IMO is a...

Was the Transfiguration a vision, or an actual appearance of Moses and Elijah?

His argument seems to be founded on grammar, rather than a source. If it was as he says, the verb should be in the middle voice, rather than active. https://daedalus.umkc.edu/FirstGreekBook/JWW_FGB5.html#:~:text=The%20Greek%20verb%20has%20three,somehow%20concerned%20with%20the%20action.

Was the Transfiguration a vision, or an actual appearance of Moses and Elijah?

It's likely that 1st century Jews viewed it literally. In the Book of 1Enoch, Enoch is shown a place where the deceased martyrs dwell, awaiting their resurrection. Enoch sees them crying out to God for justice for their murders, and in particular the voice of Abel cries out. The 5th seal in...

Was the Transfiguration a vision, or an actual appearance of Moses and Elijah?

You're putting an awful lot of weight on 1 or 2 words from a single verse. What do you do with Enoch and Elijah? They didn't "ascend" to heaven under their own power, but they were "taken" there.

Take A Stand - Stand to gain, or stand to lose?

This is relatable. The best parts of church are the singing, and the before-and-after-service where you talk with people and perhaps go out to lunch. The sermon... most often that's an exercise in biting one's tongue.

When did the 2nd temple literally initially cease being the holy place?

When did the 2nd temple literally initially cease being the holy place?

Paul performed a Nazirite vow. During the vow one's hair is not cut, and at the end of the vow the hair is shaved and burned as an offering. This is not a burnt offering or sin offering. I do not believe there is an animal sacrifice. As for what Paul was planning, Acts tell us that Paul was...

When did the 2nd temple literally initially cease being the holy place?

I think most prophecy has been fulfilled in a literal sense. In some cases, we don't have the historical records so it's hard to see it. To put it another way, if a prophecy doesn't come true shortly after given, the prophet is a false prophet (per Deuteronomy). Yes, I believe in a future...

When did the 2nd temple literally initially cease being the holy place?

That's kind of what I figured would happen. It isn't the easiest concept to grasp.
