I witnessed someone speaking in tongues today

Understanding is not the only way in which we can be edified by our own tongue-speaking. There is an emotional (non-verbal) component as well (and I don't mean a 'buzz'); it's possible to comprehend the feeling behind the words (e.g. love, compassion) without understanding the words themselves...

I witnessed someone speaking in tongues today

Did the speakers know what they were saying? Nowhere does Scripture say this. And Paul would not have needed to say, "If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet" - because they would have been able to interpret the tongue themselves. Really? That's not been my experience. I can...

I witnessed someone speaking in tongues today

I pray in tongues sometimes - but only at home, never in public. I received the gift about 18 months after I became a Christian, and it did wonders for my prayer life in English too! I fail to see how having a complete Bible makes tongues superfluous. They were never necessary - because not...

    KJV versus Modern Translations

you suppose that "old" means "better", do you not? My reason (and it's not just "my" reason) for supposing that has already been stated, and so far you've given no argument against it. "...that you soon not be shaken in mind, nor troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from...

    KJV versus Modern Translations

None of this is to the point. 1) If you read my post carefully, I did say "likely to be more accurate". Where is the assumption there? 2) In Colossians, Paul is talking about people who preach a distorted gospel, not people who mis-copy documents. The New Testament was not yet in existence! 3)...

    KJV versus Modern Translations

Numbers are irrelevant. Think about it... if we were ever to find the original of one of Paul's letters, that single document would be more reliable than millions of copies! And the later the copy, the more likely it is to contain accumulated errors. Older copies are fewer in number (simply...

Easter ? What are we celebrating?

Where I now live, in Wales, Easter is called "Pasg" (derived from Pascha). So presumably that makes it OK, and I can go ahead and celebrate it.

    quick quiz

I'm pretty sure that's a myth - every time I hear it, the thickness has increased! Think about it... a structure 3 feet thick would be a wall, not a veil/curtain. And you wouldn't be able to hang it on poles (Exodus 26:31-33). No, it was thick material - like a tapestry - but more like 3...

Billy Graham's Gospel compared with the Gospel of Grace

Agreed. I knew hardly any Scripture when I became a Christian. Not sure what this has to do with "making decisions" at evangelistic meetings, though.

Billy Graham's Gospel compared with the Gospel of Grace

That a is a totally unwarranted assumption. If their faith were in their decision only, they wouldn't be saved.

Struggling with same-sex attraction (I need help)...

I agree with Stranger - except that if you're not very familiar with the Bible I would advise you to read a modern English version.

    Interesting Read on Bible Versions

That argument cuts both ways - it could equally be used to condemn the KJV for adding to God's word! So it proves nothing.

Billy Graham's Gospel compared with the Gospel of Grace

Point taken - but nevertheless, the Holy Spirit did work through Billy Graham's preaching to give life to the dead. Not all his 'converts' were merely 'buying his product' on the basis of an emotional reaction. There were many who became genuine believers. I know some of them.

    Interesting Read on Bible Versions

This may surprise you, but some of us study the Bible version issue properly and come to the conclusion that the modern versions are not corrupt and that it's all a storm in a teacup.

    Interesting Read on Bible Versions

Strange that these articles never list all the verses where the newer versions state Christ's deity more strongly than the KJV. e.g. John 1:18 (NIV 2011); Titus 2:13 (NIV) It makes the writers appear very biased - even (dare I say it) prejudiced.

What is the correct view on genesis

Were you baptised as a baby, or as a believer?

    Mark 16:9-20

I'm not "attacking" it - merely pointing out its limitations. Being tied to the KJV is one of them - it's much less useful for those of us who use other Bible versions. There's no denying that the Strong's numbers are useful for reference (especially in Hebrew, where it can be difficult to...

    Mark 16:9-20

"Strong's" is a Bible dictionary based on the KJV. It gives you the Greek and Hebrew words and lists the ways in which the KJV translates them. It isn't used by real scholars, but is very popular with amateur Bible linguists. "Root words" are sometimes helpful in teasing out a word's basic...

    Spurma from YHVH

Both. They are one and the same person. True. Yeshua the human being did not exist before His conception - but as the eternal Son of God He has always existed. The Word became flesh...

    Mark 16:9-20

I've never heard of David 'marking a wall' - it isn't in the Bible, that's for sure. But it may be a Jewish tradition. The history of the Bible manuscripts is quite fascinating and worth looking up. What it boils down to is: we don't have the originals, only copies. It is possible for copiers...
