I think the answer to that question is found in what Paul writes in 2 Thessalonians 2:10-11.

How do we come to know someone? In large part, by listening carefully to him or her speak. The same is true with the one God and with his Son, the Messiah.

I hear in Jesus and in Paul an echo from Moses and their God, “Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord” (Deuteronomy 6:4).

I see and hear people asking how to know if they are following the true Messiah or someone masquerading as the Messiah. A muted Messiah isn’t the true Messiah.

“My sheep hear my voice ...” (John 10:27) That sounds very different from “The words of Jesus are only for the Jews, not for you.” It isn’t Paul who doesn’t want us to hear the Messiah’s voice, his words, his message, his gospel. It’s the devil.

Other translations of the passage speak about “learning Messiah” by ”listening to his message”. Knowing the Messiah is learning the Messiah, and that comes from listening to him teach, listening to him preach, the gospel of the kingdom.
