Is the story of Adam & Eve a parable?

Fair point, if the author of Exodus 20, who said that God wrote these words on stone tablets, got the story right. So it is the credibility of the author of Exodus that is at stake now.

Is the story of Adam & Eve a parable?

Not the direct words of God. God didn't dictate the Bible word for word. If He had, there would be no errors in it. Yet there are.

Is the story of Adam & Eve a parable?

If I may - the real issue here is your statement "God said He created all things that exist in six days." With all due respect, God never said that. THE AUTHOR(S) OF GENESIS said that (whoever he or they may be). Inspired? Sure. But don't equate "inspired" with "inerrant." They are not the...

Is the story of Adam & Eve a parable?

A Khosian and an Aleut walk into a bar in Reykjavik. “Where you from?” asks the Aleut. “Southern Africa,” the Khosian replies. “And you?” “Western Alaska. Seems we’ve each traveled far to get here.” “Tell me about your ancestors,” says the Aleut. “Oh, I can trace my heritage back 5,000 years,"...

Is the story of Adam & Eve a parable?

I certainly agree that we should not believe everything in the Bible "blindly." The question is whether "God's word" is always to be taken literally (I say No), or whether it can be metaphorical, allegorical, parabolic, etc. (I say Yes). In the latter case it doesn't cease to be "God's word."...

I hate myself, and hate being an atheist.

I'm a Christian who believes in evolution, and I have no difficulties whatsoever. I say the Adam and Eve story is a Jewish myth. And I mean “myth” in the best sense, as something not factually accurate but profoundly “true” in what it teaches us. I’m pretty sure all First Century Jews and...

Thoughts on Christian Mysticism and Contemplative Practice

Where are you getting this notion that healing methods were all one-offs, impossible to duplicate?

Is the story of Adam & Eve a parable?

I've seen various dates given for the writing of Genesis 1-11, and I haven't made up my mind (although I'm pretty sure Moses didn't write it despite the understandable tradition that he did). An exile period writing is certainly plausible.

Where does the Pope get his authority?

You are correct, @Marymog. I never could understand the anti-Catholic attacks on Peter's primacy. They'd get much more traction challenging the succession rather than the origin of that primacy.

Is the story of Adam & Eve a parable?

I can't agree with Gen. 9:18-19 and Gen. 10:32 that all of the races on the planet are descended from Noah’s sons. We can trace their progeny's migration to the regions mentioned in Gen. 10. You want to go beyond those Biblically identified regions and say they migrated everywhere on the...

    Filling in Scriptural Blanks

I'd call that harmless speculation myself.

Is the story of Adam & Eve a parable?

Why do you reject science? Many of its conclusions are just plain compelling.

Is the story of Adam & Eve a parable?

As to Paul's references to the A&E creation story, see my Post #94 above.

Is the story of Adam & Eve a parable?

That descent is tough for me to believe. The present day human race is too biologically and racially diverse to descend from Noah in the time allotted by the Torah.

Is the story of Adam & Eve a parable?

I don't deny that Jesus is God. (Where are you distilling that?) The A&E story is not part of "the gospel" that Paul received through the revelation of Jesus Christ. It was part of the accepted Jewish lore of the times in which Paul was born, got instructed (both in Tarsus and at Gamaliel's...

Is the story of Adam & Eve a parable?

I'm not attacking Paul. What Paul said doesn't upset me at all. I'm simply challenging your ridiculous hypothesis that everything he wrote was from Jesus, and not from other sources. Sometimes Paul quotes other writers. Obviously those words aren't from Jesus!

Is the story of Adam & Eve a parable?

So you DO doubt that Paul the Pharisee learned the A&E story before his conversion! I thought so! Is everything Paul writes in his letters, regardless of where he learned it, absolute truth in your view?
  18. R

Is the story of Adam & Eve a parable?

And you think the A&E story was one of those "got-it-from-Jesus" doctrines that Paul preached, rather than something Paul was taught and raised believing decades before bring thrown off his horse? Wow. You don't know much about Jewish history, do you?

Deconstruction, or Reconstruction - Renovating Your Religious Views

Is there a reason I should give a hoot what you assume about me? If so, I'm missing it.

Is the story of Adam & Eve a parable?

Actually, Paul said it. Not Jesus. But I digress. I believe Paul was using the same parabolic story then in vogue to make his own point to Timothy.
