    A Question for Jehovah's Witnesses

If I may expand on this a bit: At the end of John 1:1 we find καὶ Θεὸς ἦν ὁ Λόγος. The author placed no article before Θεὸς. But the word order, with the predicate Θεὸς coming before the verb, suggests it is to be construed as definite ("God") rather than indefinite ("a god"). This is a...

The history of how Sunday worship came about.

I agree with Tertullian on all of this, but the words "at Rome" really are misleading. Sunday worship had gotten into the Christian church in lots of places, not just Rome. The sentence would be better without "at Rome" in it.

Where does the Pope get his authority?

I'm certainly not anti-Catholic. But I haven't seen the evidence that Pope Sylvester was involved in the convening of Nicaea in any way whatsoever. Can you point me to some?

    A Question for Jehovah's Witnesses

I ask again: Don't the Greek lexicons you a referring to have both upper case and lower case lettering?

Where does the Pope get his authority?

I'm pretty sure the Council of Nicaea in 325 was convened at the request of Constantine, not Pope Sylvester (who didn't attend).

Where does the Pope get his authority?

I wouldn't call this a blending of civil and ecclesiastical authorities -- but Justinian deposed Pope Silverius. And that was really ballsy.

    A Question for Jehovah's Witnesses

Don't the Greek lexicons you a referring to have both upper case and lower case lettering (unlike the original writings)?

A Third Jewish Temple is Required

I'm not coming to his aid. I'm commenting on your tone.

A Third Jewish Temple is Required

You just accused a fellow Christian expressing his understanding of religious maters of being influenced by an evil spirit! You just accused a fellow Christian expressing his understanding of religious maters of being ignorant and stupid! How's the view from up there, @Davy?

    A Question for Jehovah's Witnesses

Everybody concedes that "god" is ascribed in Scripture to non-deity beings and even mortal beings dozens of times. I thought we were discussing whether John 1:1 was such a time. And my point was simply that with all capitals in the original, your claim in Post #816 ("Like capitol G God to the...

    A Question for Jehovah's Witnesses

The point is that with all capitals, we cannot tell one way or another whether "God" or "god" is intended.

What 'Unorthodox' doctrine has come into the church?

You're gonna have to explain that logic to me.

The Only Way We Will Ever Agree

I don't subscribe to any gospel that overlooks sins and even accepts certain sins as love -- but I distinguish being a homosexual from engaging in homosexual acts. I DO subscribe to the notion (it is crazy to call it a "gospel") that Muslims and others serve the same God we do -- the Abrahamic...

The Only Way We Will Ever Agree

God is not more concerned with us agreeing with each other than that we agree with Him.

Give me a succinct definition of "the social justice or social inclusive gospel," and I'll do my best to answer.

    By Love Serve One Another

Are we talking about the same Jesus Christ who said "Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven” (Luke 6:37)? Are we talking about the same Jesus Christ who said "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the...

The Only Way We Will Ever Agree

I've already answered this. You MIGHT BE WRONG because you see Scripture as the sole source of God's truth; or because you and they disagree on Scripture's proper interpretation; or on what counts as Scripture; or due to ignorance -- seasoned with a dose of confirmation bias for entrenched...

The Only Way We Will Ever Agree

Sure. But many disagree on what God's truth actually is (which is why sites like this one get so contentious). Sometimes it's because they don't see Scripture as the sole source of God's truth. Sometimes it's because they disagree on Scripture's proper interpretation. Sometimes it's even...

The Case for the Sinless Ever-Virgin Mary.

You can't have intended "him" to mean "Trump" here. (Although his mother was named Mary.)

The history of how Sunday worship came about.

Around 150 C.E. Justin Martyr references the regular practice of Christians meeting for worship, including the Eucharist, on "the day of the Sun" -- and ties it to Christ's resurrection (First Apology 67): "And on the day called Sunday, all who live in cities or in the country gather together...
