Where does the Pope get his authority?

I posted this on anther thread ("Peter the Rock?") but nobody responded, so I thought I'd repeat it here in case someone in the know on this topic is still following: It seems to me that Matt. 16:18 is unavoidably ambiguous on the key issue of whether the Rock Jesus had in mind was Peter the...

    Peter the Rock?

It seems to me that Matt. 16:18 is unavoidably ambiguous on the key issue of whether the Rock Jesus had in mind was Peter the man or Peter's confession of faith. St. John Chrysostom thought it was the latter, in Homily 54: "He added this, And I say unto you, You are Peter, and upon this rock...

    Can Priests Forgive Sin?

Can someone please discuss how 2 Peter 2:20-21 fits into this debate?

    Peter the Rock?

Remind me how we know Jesus taught Paul about the foundation of the Church.

    Is Reality an Illusion?

Jews don't recognize Christ as the Messiah. Protestants don't recognize the Pope as head of the Church. And Evangelicals don't recognize each other at Hooters or at the liquor store.

    Peter the Rock?

Sure, Jesus knew everything He told the disciples. The question is, did Paul know everything Jesus told His disciples? That Jesus was Paul's teacher (whatever that may mean) doesn't answer that question. (I've had many teachers. And I don't know even a small fraction of everything they have...

    Peter the Rock?

I can't quite bring myself to agree. Jesus likely told his disciples a thousand more things than are recorded in the four canonical gospels. Are you suggesting that Paul knew every one of them?

    Peter the Rock?

Has anyone considered the possibility that Paul wrote First Corinthians in ignorance of the statement that Matthew records in Matt. 16?

    Dealing With Matthew's Mistake

My guess is that the Syriac copyist just deleted "Jeremiah" and left "prophet" in. because (1) the copyist recognized the error, and (2) didn't want to substitute "Zechariah" for "Jeremiah" because adding words is shmaltzier than deleting them.

Are the Jews Jealous of Christians' Salvation?

Since the Jews don't believe that faith in Christ is the key to salvation, nor that God has opened up salvation to the Gentiles, why would there be any jealously whatsoever? Romans 11:11 just doesn't make much sense to me. Does it to you?

If you think that at communion, the physical bread is miraculously transformed into the physical flesh of Chris and wish to wager on it

I doubt either of us will receive His answer any time soon, certainly not while one of us is still able to collect on the wager.

If you think that at communion, the physical bread is miraculously transformed into the physical flesh of Chris and wish to wager on it

It seems to me that when the competing propositions are "X" and "not X," you can skip one of your steps ("Between 0 and 10, how much weight do you put on each of the above propositions? ... "tell me those two weights") because the sum of those two numbers will always be 10. (Give P1 a 6, and...

Does God mind if idols of 'saints' are worshipped in church?

Well, here is another perspective on the "inculturation" event you are referring to: The Pope, the Amazon, and Pachamama

Why don't we enforce the biblical prescriptives on hair length for men and women?

1 Cor. 11:6 says "if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should cover her head." Sorry, but one doesn't follow from the other. If this is supposed to be a logical argument, Paul dropped the ball. 1 Cor. 11:15 says "long hair is given to her as a...

What are the main doctrinal differences between Jehovah's Witnesses and mainstream Christianity?

Agree with you on the importance of context. And agree on Jesus not speaking of himself as the Father's equal (although the "I and the Father are One" statement needs some exegesis in order to reach that conclusion). But I don't find the dearth of such comments conclusive, given that the...

What are the main doctrinal differences between Jehovah's Witnesses and mainstream Christianity?

That's certainly the NWT view of how ei-mi should be translated here. There are several dozen instances of ei-mi in the New Testament, but I believe almost all of them are translated by the NWT as "I am" rather than "I have been." Am I right about this?
