Faith doesn't fall away, it remains "faith". Our belonging is our choice, that's why when we fall away, we fall away from belonging (to the Church). You don't seem to understand that it is our identifying with the Church (by which we make our "belonging" a fact) that is tested?

I can see how God would want both Grace and works. The truth is, we need to be honest with ourselves: are we inspired by what Christ did on the Cross, or are we sharing that inspiration? Again, we should be able to say 'yes' to both.

If we had our own faith and nothing else, we would never develop much character. God wants us to experience Him to the fullest, therefore we need character (therefore we need each other).

The little book is about the circular nature of life, the "He who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me" sort of circularity (John, from memory). It's about putting faith in simple terms, knowing that when it (your faith) has come back to you, you will be able to reap a reward.
