Tongues ( 'sign' gifts ) did/did not cease?

Can we get back to the Day of Pentecost? Which do you chose? The word of man, or the word of God?

Tongues ( 'sign' gifts ) did/did not cease?

Yes. But only because it was cultural. The same with men with long hair? There is nothing supernatural about either of those. You can also tell by the context before and after that 34 and 35 were added later. Also his words about women to Timothy was his opinion, not a commandment of God...

Tongues ( 'sign' gifts ) did/did not cease?

Women not speaking or teaching was a Jewish cultural law. Females didn't even go to school! Rules on the Gifts of the Spirit do not have that liberty. At the end of chapter 14 Paul writes this: 37 If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things which...

Tongues ( 'sign' gifts ) did/did not cease?

Matthew you can't just believe anything that tickles your ears, but contradicts the Word of God!

Tongues ( 'sign' gifts ) did/did not cease?

What I'm saying about this OP is that the meaning of Acts 2 cannot contradict 1 Corinthians 14:2. Do you agree? 1 Corinthians 14:2 has one meaning about tongues spoken by themselves.

Tongues ( 'sign' gifts ) did/did not cease?

Exactly, but did they understand naturally or supernaturally? Remember you cannot interpret Acts 2 in contradiction to 1 Corinthians 14:2 that no one understand tongues except God. So think carefully.

Tongues ( 'sign' gifts ) did/did not cease?

It looks like Bob left and didn't tell us. I'm going for coffee everyone. See you later.

Tongues ( 'sign' gifts ) did/did not cease?

David, Bob is confused enough without throwing in another topic. Stick to the OP until he understands what happened on the Day of Pentecost.

Tongues ( 'sign' gifts ) did/did not cease?

The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth. There is only ONE Author to the Scriptures. There is only ONE correct interpretation to the Scriputures. It is up to us to study as much as we can so no doctrine of demons undermines their understanding.

Tongues ( 'sign' gifts ) did/did not cease?

Of course not, but your preconceived belief is unscriptural. Bob, someone was there to interpret on the Day of Pentecost. Who?

Tongues ( 'sign' gifts ) did/did not cease?

I'm talking about on the Day of Pentecost. Who interpreted the tongues the disciples were speaking?
  12. 1stCenturyLady

Tongues ( 'sign' gifts ) did/did not cease?

    So was there an interpreter?
  13. 1stCenturyLady

Tongues ( 'sign' gifts ) did/did not cease?

NO! That is a contradiction to 1 Corinthians 14:2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. Tell me the truth. Are you even reading what I've written to you? You're killing me, because I've shown...

Tongues ( 'sign' gifts ) did/did not cease?

So tell me about what happened on the Day of Pentecost. Did the Jews understand their languages or not? Were the disciples speaking their languages?
  15. 1stCenturyLady

Tongues ( 'sign' gifts ) did/did not cease?

The lost doctrine from the apostles that died when the church became worldly and they put up confessionals was sinlessness. But that is the "evidence" of being saved. So if your faith is of a definition that your faith is based on Jesus saves you in spite of willful sin read Revelation 22:11
  16. 1stCenturyLady

Tongues ( 'sign' gifts ) did/did not cease?

Right. The interpretation of tongues they sovereignly received from the Spirit led them to repent and be baptized that day. They understood their own languages supernaturally, while someone else heard their own language supernaturally. It also says they heard THEM, thus like a choir.

Tongues ( 'sign' gifts ) did/did not cease?

Tongues is NOT the evidence of being filled with the Spirit. The evidence is freedom from sin. However, everyone who IS filled with the Spirit CAN speak in tongues among other things according to Mark 16:16-18. But some abhor even the thought of God's gift and wouldn't be caught dead speaking in...

Tongues ( 'sign' gifts ) did/did not cease?

Bob, you're killing me! :jest: Let's try this again. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one HEARD their own language being spoken. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us HEARS...

Tongues ( 'sign' gifts ) did/did not cease?

Bob, how did you not see it. The devout Jews received a SUPERNATURAL GIFT TO DRAW THEM TO CHRIST. IT IS CALLED INTERPRETATION OF TONGUES. Now that I've told you, now go back and read it again. Scripture and stories cannot contradict Scripture. 1 Corinthians 14:2 2 For he who speaks in a tongue...
