Understanding what Sheol, Hell, Hades mean.

Yes, when I went to school they had us memorize about a third of the Bible from the KJV. When I recall verses, it's typically in that version. I've been at the exploring and thinking and interpreting a long time. I'm not sure it's exactly imaginative. I DO allow other sources to inform my...

Understanding what Sheol, Hell, Hades mean.

Can do... Psalms 18: The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid. The sorrows of [sheol] compassed me about: the snares of death prevented me. Verses 4 and 5 show the watery nature of the pit (floods), as well as an idea of restriction of movement...

Understanding what Sheol, Hell, Hades mean.

Yes? I'm thinking of Hades, but I think of the two as being the same place. Greek Hades is a place of waiting for judgment. The heroic dead eventually go on to Elysium, the wicked dead go on to Tartarus, and the non-exceptional are either re-born into the world or are forgotten and pass into...

Understanding what Sheol, Hell, Hades mean.

You're speaking of the literal Gehenna (Hinnom's Hill)? Don't you think that it stood as an emblem for a place in the hereafter? Definitely related. In Greek writings, Tartarus isn't part of Hades, but the ENTRANCE to Tartarus is in Hades. Also, Tartarus is a titan in conflict with their...

Why are Bible scholars leaving Christianity?

Glad to see you! I was afraid your vacation might be permanent.

What if I don’t want eternal life?

Not everyone has the same beliefs on the afterlife. It isn't exactly a settled thing within all Christianity, because the book only tells us so much. Some believe in Annihilation - that some souls are destroyed and simply cease to exist. Perhaps that's a belief you should look into.

Understanding what Sheol, Hell, Hades mean.

Agree. But they did believe in an in-between place where the dead were imprisoned awaiting judgment. There is no Old Testament Hell as such, only Sheol. But we do have Belial from even the earliest books, and Satan features prominently in Job. There is a pretty good chance that they weren't...

Understanding what Sheol, Hell, Hades mean.

You've done your research. Lots of good info here. One quick contradiction... GEHENNA seems to be emblematic of TARTARUS rather than HADES. The two are not the same place.

God Created the World out of... Monsters?

Leviathan is in chapter 41... the Behemoth is in the last half of chapter 40. :)

God Created the World out of... Monsters?

Yes, the book of Job is largely a theodicy, but there is no verdict in the culmination because no-one can be found fit to serve as a judge of God.

God Created the World out of... Monsters?

A whale that has scales and claws, and breathes fire, huh? Perhaps. If you understand that they are mythological representations of chaos, then it reveals something about the character of God - He is the One who brings order.

    Trump ~ guilty

The answer to that isn't really clear to me, and there might be more than one answer, given the multiplicity of charges. I'm not in the know. But appearances count for something, and here the appearance is that this is largely political. The timing is suspect. The number of charges seems...

    Trump ~ guilty

There's probably nobody here who can do that. You seem more qualified than most of us. But I would suggest that you are using the wrong measuring stick. Something being LEGAL doesn't make it RIGHT. Stacking charges might be legal, but it smells fishy when it happens to a presidential...

    Trump ~ guilty

I am also not a fan of Trump, but I have reservations about this. Has due process really happened here? Or is this just political? Because this all happened years ago but prosecution has been delayed until the middle of the election cycle, it certainly looks political. Frankly, it's something...

God Created the World out of... Monsters?

The first time I read it, that's how I took it too. But there were some things about it that bothered me - mostly how the 2 'beasts' had attributes that don't belong to any real animal that we know of... drinking whole rivers, breathing fire, etc. I don't buy that argument. God also asks Job...

I think so too! Why did God need to lock up the oceans behind doors and bars? ;)

God Created the World out of... Monsters?

At the beginning of Genesis 1, God forms the world out of waters that are "without form" and "void." You're probably familiar with this. But are you familiar with the other story of creation in the Bible? Starting in Job 38, we have another accounting of creation in which God tells Job all...

    Does God : Know everything?

I can't tell whether you're agreeing or disagreeing. The Hebrew word translated "nations" and the word translated "Gentiles" are the same word - Goyim.

    Does God : Know everything?

Nah... the Bible says His Word will go to every tribe and nation. Also... arguing with Calvinists is usually just frustrating. When you've got your head that far up...
