They didn't have much knowledge at that time, as indeed a lot of religions do not today. A lot of people still think it is God killing their children and making people sick and so forth....Not ruddy like it ! God is not, nor has He ever been a contradiction to Himself.....

Well said, that is a great way of putting it. Many don't even realize what he did go through. I have thought it odd actually that a cross was chosen to signify Him because it says that he despised the shame of it, so we just keep on and on reminding Him of it, and some won't even let Him off...
