Philippians 2 says that for a believer 'it is God that worketh in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure'. Works are not supposed to be meritorious in order supposedly to gain favour with God. Romans speaks of 'the obedience of faith' and 'obedience to the faith'.

In terms of what was Scriptural, all pointed to Christ, for Hebrew Christians. It was not some kind of synagogue authority that supposedly morphed into an ecclesiastical one.

I've understood the judgment seat of Christ to be about the assessment of Christian service (2 Corinthians 5.10).

The central theme of the written Word of God is the living and eternal Word Himself.... :)
