I think he simply means, genuinely saved. (The Parable of the Sower strongly shows there is a difference between those who are so, genuinely, and those who are not.)

I do love Isaiah 48.10: 'I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction.' It's not avoiding the affliction that counts, but rather throughout it knowing by faith that you are indeed chosen.... :) The Lord Jesus said in John 16.33: 'In the world ye shall have tribulation; but be of good cheer...

@MatthewG I saw a while ago an explanation of how skull tattoos - to a motivated wearer - be used to indicate a rugged toughness to face adversity.

The Lord indeed allows it, but brings us through with joy also...

@Addy Ear piercing and tattoos are I guess often part of 'the tapestry of life', for a lot of ppl. They can be done in moderation. A lot of Godly people might well do some of both, from time to time. It's the Godly heart that needs to shine out.

@Addy Although 'blessed' in Psalm 1 could be translated 'happy', yet the package of life as a whole under God's sovereignty must indeed be embraced; Isaiah 40.10 even says: 'I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction'.
