Ephesians 2.9 makes clear salvation is "not of works". It's trust in the Lord Jesus' "obedience unto death, even the death of the cross" (Philippians 2.8) that really counts, in faith.

Romans 8 and John's First Epistle are very clear about the believer's assurance. It's entirely the work of God by grace; the believer's redemption depends on Christ's sure faithfulness to the believer because of His finished work at the Cross, not on us supposedly trying to "keep it up".
