Thanks to all who voted so far in the poll I can see that this was sensible. What I struggle with is hyperbole which erodes people's ability to consider the Scriptures dispassionately; and sometimes the 'smoking is sin' discourse seems to do this; not that I remotely advocate smoking.

Ephesians is both so doctrinal and so practical.

As @Butterfly, who said she did it at 50, commented: it's part of the culture now. Clearly when the moment came for your daughters, it would have come quite naturally to them because it's part of the culture now, isn't it?

@Heart2Soul I know you said the cold weather helped you quit; I hope the warm weather now isn't proving problematic. As regards the 'Is is a sin?' idea, I do struggle with the idea that smoking is always a sin.

Yes, temperance at the deeper spiritual level (as opposed to the simple idea of not drinking wine, etc.) makes for a good study.

Oh I'm not saying ppl should go for it; but it's out there. But it used to be always men who did it; and a lot of ppl found wrestling cheerful to watch.

I do prefer the term 'human responsibility' to 'free will'. It seems to fit passages such as Ephesians 2.1-10 much better.

Wrestling is kind of cheerful to watch. Back in those days it would always be men wrestling with men; still is, mainly. Now there's also women's wrestling (but I wouldn't be comfortable with men and women wrestling with each other).

There were the three channels for years, BBC1, BBC2 and ITV. That was it. So you didn't like the wrestling programmes?

Thank-you for your comments; there is also the question of motive and effectiveness, which would factor into the thinking of the many young ppl who get faith based tattoos which are very effective bridge building conversation-starters with other young ppl.
