Yes, I can see that culturally men are often expected to hide their feelings. In some ways, not a bad thing, though not always.

These days also military wives as well as service personnel are a big demographic of ppl likely to get tattooed; and since military are probably also likely to do it more reflectively (maybe faith/family/patriotic design themes) and with care, it's probably a good thing for their service...

We all as believers can and should 'grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ' (2 Peter 3). :)

Maybe self discovery is the wrong term; maybe you already knew what would make you feel good; something very much bound up with your culture today that you knew, doing it reflectively, would make you feel really good, I guess?
