Interesting about that detail from your husband's family background. Frankly I think it can be perfectly wholesome for men, young and older, to have their ears pierced and since it's a widespread style it would probably seem sensible for parents to allow it as readily for sons as they tend to do...

Although Romans does indeed speak of 'the obedience of faith' and 'obedience to the faith' at the end and at the beginning of the Epistle, it is indeed true that salvation is 'not of works, lest any man should boast' (Ephesians 2.9).

Hebrews 11 has excellent examples of faith. 'By faith...' etc.

I'm sure you enjoy being in a minority and doing your own thing! Of course, Scripture has many examples of ear piercing/earrings for both genders!

Scripture is many-faceted revelation, for the understanding of which we need the Holy Spirit.

I agree that interpretation and context are so important. Although I don't myself have a problem with Calvinism as a body of Scripture doctrine.

We do need to have our thinking informed by Scripture, indeed, yes.

@Butterfly FYI: It strikes me that ear piercing for men is in some ways comparable to tattoos for women: just as ear piercing years ago was overwhelmingly associated with women but now many men have it done with relish, so also just as tattoos were formerly overwhelmingly associated with men...

They are not even questions that secularist ethics committees will likely address adequately in any case...

I think your header verse from Proverbs 3.5-6 sums it up, really.

"If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him." (James 1.5)
