Well, okay. There was quite a hermitic tradition, I believe; although John the Baptist in the desert would unlikely have followed some sectarian code of conduct.

@VictoryinJesus FYI, do you think these Scripture tattoos, above, are effective? I guess it's getting towards Christmas shopping time and certainly it would seem that for Christians of either gender a tattoo voucher would seem a suitable gift for someone.

Well, I would see that Romans 8.38-39 is a great verse for the eternal security of the believer, because it depends on the work of Christ and not on human agency. But as you imply, if people's definitions are all different, then the conclusion will likely be different also.

For Jewish hearers and readers, the Elijah references would have been particularly significant. It reminds me of the 'witnessed by the law and by the prophets' reference in Romans 3.
