PETER AND PAUL AND THE RESURRECTION AND SALVATION

The idea that Paul preached a different gospel from Peter and the apostles is nonsense. They both preached Jesus as Christ, crucified for our sins. Acts 4: Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them ... Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of...

Claimed prophetic fulfillment seems highly questionable. - Were they acquired rather than intended?

Yes. Latin is an Indo-European language. Greek is ALSO an Indo-European language. There is a common root. The Greek word Pléroó comes from an Indo-European root (pele). So does the Greek poly-. The Latin pluralis derives from the same word (pele). French plurel derives from it, and then...

Bear with me for a minute as I develop a thought - The Biblical idea of the soul/spirit living in the body is rooted in the idea of water/air being held in a container. When a person expresses their thoughts through speaking, they "pour out their soul" or "pour out their spirit." So far so...

Pléroó is from the same etymological root from which we get "plus" and "plural" (Indo-European pele-). The idea of adding is definitely in there. I think there's a basis for it. However, I am not a professor of ancient languages. You shouldn't take my word for it.

    Why trust the "Early Fathers?"

Athanasius lived 2 centuries later than Justin, and on a different continent. Not sure they were in the same circles.

I think you might need to update your definition of the word 'fulfilled.' I read it more like this, and find no duplicity: ...that it might be re-filled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, "Out of Egypt have I called my son." :)

Claimed prophetic fulfillment seems highly questionable. - Were they acquired rather than intended?

I can't answer that definitively. Joel doesn't tell us, and history doesn't record what happened afterwards. However, based on Joel's inclusion in the canon of Scripture, and his not being stoned by the people, I would hypothesize the answer to be 'yes.'

Why does that bother you? Someone told you that was wrong at some point?

So, if we were to be good Bible students and put Joel's words into context... they're about the restoration of Israel after a plague of locusts. Luke is doing the thing, again.

Moses is the one who gave the rule for stoning false prophets, and for determining that a prophet is false when their prophesy doesn't come true. See the verses quoted in my last post. I think you entered a conversation at the middle? Allow me to catch you up. The idea here is that the...

It's right there in the middle of the oldest book in the Bible... Deu 18:20-22 But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die. And if thou say in thine heart...

Claimed prophetic fulfillment seems highly questionable. - Were they acquired rather than intended?

It's always short-term. If you prophesy and it doesn't come true in your lifetime... you're a false prophet, by the Biblical test (Deu 18). And that rule seems completely incompatible with the idea that the Old Testament prophets all spoke of Jesus (John 12:41). Yes. Just how valuable is...

I'm 100% confident that people messed with stuff. I'm also 100% sure that they didn't invent and insert the same hermeneutic into ALL of the gospels and epistles. I can find that same hermeneutic at work in the Dead Sea Scrolls, which are primary materials pre-dating the New Testament. I...

Claimed prophetic fulfillment seems highly questionable. - Were they acquired rather than intended?

You've proved that the apostles co-opt prophecies out-of-context and claim fulfillment for them in their own day. Someone is using the Bible wrong... do we think it's Jesus and the Apostles? Or... Someone ISN'T using the Bible right... do we think it's the modern church? I can't see a...

I think the right word is appropriate. Or maybe misappropriate, depending on how you feel about that.

It isn't just Luke that co-opted Psalms 2:7 in Acts. If you flip back to Mark 1 (or Matt 3 or Luke 3) you'll find that Jesus and John are acting it out, and God Himself mis-quotes the verse, right out of the heavens! Mark 1:11 And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved...

Claimed prophetic fulfillment seems highly questionable. - Were they acquired rather than intended?

Psalm 2 is theorized to be part of David's coronation as king. David is clearly referring to himself here. Re-directing the prophecy to be about Jesus is complicated. The intention - to crown a new king - is the same. We might say 'but Jesus is not David.' However, Jesus is David's direct...

    Why trust the "Early Fathers?"

Why? Is Luther authoritative? I don't think so. Anyway, Sola Scriptura is often misunderstood. The Reformers had 5 solae - sola scriptura, sola fide, sola gratia, solus christus, and soli Deo Gloria. If the point was to replace the church with the Bible as an authority, there could be only...

Were messianic prophecies acquired, rather than intended? (in the original texts)

That's grammatical context. That's sometimes referred to as redemptive context. Basically, what does the verse mean to the overall message of the Bible? Usually identifying the redemption of mankind by the Lord Jesus Christ as that message. There's also historical context - how does what we...
