Is the claim of only one God false? - How many gods are there?

    From The Devil's Dictionary?

How did the Trinity doctrine develop in the early church?

The church basically split in two over the (late) addition of the bolded words. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filioque

Is the story of Noah literal?

Mostly true if you're talking about Revelation and/or Daniel. Nobody interprets EVERYTHING literally. There are some things that are clearly not literal. Some that are even marked as "hey look, you need to interpret."

Is the story of Noah literal?

Moses destroyed the giants in Bashan (Og) and Gilead (Sihon) and Caleb destroyed the ones in Hebron. David killed Goliath. What other giants escaped annihilation?

    unofficial gods:

I suspect that it's built on a kernel of truth... God mostly works through people. The more people are following his instructions, the more is getting done. Also true of any king or leader of men.

Is the Bible polytheistic? - Are there many gods, or only one?

It's treason. If the gods are partisan, which each having their own cities, then worshiping "other gods" is the same thing as conspiring with other cities or tribes or nations.

Is the story of Noah literal?

I'm not sure it's exactly hidden, but yes... God commissioned Israel to wipe out the remnant of the giants - all the nephilim, rephaim, and anakim.

Is the story of Noah literal?

Acts 7 quotes the same verse. But the point there is that the Israelites always do things God doesn't command. They make sacrifices that weren't commanded. They built a temple, when a tabernacle was what God commanded. It even says that part of God's punishment was... 42 Then God turned...

Is the story of Noah literal?

So, you didn't read it, then? Or maybe more likely, you're trying hard to ignore the meaning... Also... we are SO off-topic. If you want to continue this, let's do so in a new topic. Or an old one... I'm sure there's a bunch of them on Biblical contradictions.

Is the story of Noah literal?

It's not a matter of a single verse here or there. Leviticus chapters 1-9 prescribes 5 different sacrifices, including the sin offering and trespass offering for those who have done wrong, and the Red Heifer sacrifice on the Day of Atonement. Amos 5 says God didn't prescribe ANY sacrifices...

Sweeping the Polytheism of Ancient Israel Under the Rug

The math is unexpectedly difficult. 12 natural sons. 12 territories. But... 1 Reuben 2 Simeon 3 Levi 4 Judah 5 Dan 6 Naphtali 7 Gad 8 Asher 9 Issachar 10 Zebulun 11 Joseph 11 Benjamin 12 Manasseh 13 Ephraim Joseph was adopted by Pharoah, which in Hebrew thinking makes him not-a-son-anymore...

Sweeping the Polytheism of Ancient Israel Under the Rug

I've recently been reading Poems of Ancient Ugarit and something I've learned there is relevant here, but maybe a little theologically awkward. "Son of God" is a Canaanite regnal title. The Canaanites envisioned the kings of their city-states as being sons of their high god - sons of El. When...

Is the Bible polytheistic? - Are there many gods, or only one?

Correct. Every city and nomadic tribe in the Late Bronze/Early Iron ages had a patron deity. National rivalries were most often envisaged as conflicts between the gods of those cities/tribes. The Bible is consistent with ancient inscriptions in this regard - it envisions YHVH triumphing over...

    Exploring Trinitarian Logic

I think we might be talking past each other. Like, this seems generically true. No disagreement. But what does it have to do with Israel's transition from polytheism to monotheism, or the quoted bit of Deuteronomy that I was talking about?

    Exploring Trinitarian Logic

The ones the Israelites were worshiping before Moses (but also after) - Hathor, Molech, Dagon, Baal, Asherah, etc.

    Exploring Trinitarian Logic

With difficulty. There isn't really any place in ancient history where we can point out a polytheistic society that just up and abandons polytheism in favor of monotheism. Instead, what tends to happen is that one God sort of absorbs the others until there's just One left. Often, the cults of...
