    Filling in Scriptural Blanks

1:1 ἐν ἀρχῇ ἐποίησεν ὁ θεὸς τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ τὴν γῆν 1:1 At first put the God the heavens and the lands Yes, that's a sentence. (Eποίησεν is an odd word choice to me). I disagree that it's distinct from verse 2. They still run together. Translating Hebrew to Greek has the same trouble as...

    Filling in Scriptural Blanks

I first heard it at another forum... that you would be familiar with... from someone there who you would also be familiar with [/cryptic] After that, I looked around the interwebz and found a number of places where scholars advocate for such a translation. Here's one now!

The verse numbers that were added to Scripture in 1555 encourage the translator to make each verse a discreet sentence. It seems wrong to make a verse into half a sentence, even though that's probably the best way to translate Gen 1:1. Also see my topic God created the world out of... Monsters?

    Filling in Scriptural Blanks

Yep, that's the one single verse that is used to prop up inerrancy. Which is more likely - that our understanding of this one verse is imperfect, or that the multiple chapters that teach something different are to blame? I literally just gave 2 verses where he says EXACTLY that, and then...

Ultimately, it's not a matter of who is right and who is wrong... (?)

A quick search didn't turn it up for me. Care to point it out?

That's an elegant explaining away of what seems to be the plain meaning of those 2 verses. But it isn't just those 2 verses that discard genealogies - they're simply the clearest statements. If we go to John 8-10, we have Jesus' own teachings on the subject... and the crux of them is that we...

Ultimately, it's not a matter of who is right and who is wrong... (?)

Those verses are about the the special resurrection for martyrs. Most of us won't become martyrs.

Why I hate the Bible... Or so they say?

I believe in revelation, but it doesn't make the Bible superfluous. It acts as a sort of answer sheet or checksum. You got a revelation? Let's check that against the answer key... because there's a lot more questionable 'revelations' than real ones.

    Filling in Scriptural Blanks

It's kind of crazy to me how far some people go with inerrancy. Even the New Testament tells us to ignore the genealogies... if Paul didn't believe them, why are modern churches going to bat for them? Titus 3:9 Avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the...

    Filling in Scriptural Blanks

The verse contains a Hebrew parallelism. We can match the words in the first half to those in the second half to get more precise meaning: Thy word is true from the beginning: every one of thy righteous judgments [endureth] for ever. רֹאשׁ and עוֹלָם are actually opposing bookends - the...

    The Apostle Paul and Tattoos

Wait - Paul or Peter? The topic says Paul but the quote is Peter. The two seem very different to me. Peter seems like a man's man, and Paul is... um... the incel apostle?

God as heavenly parent - the dysfunctional view we inherited

That's a tough one. My own father's style of parenting might best be described as 'benevolent neglect.' When I was a kid, he worked 60-80 hours a week. There was always food on the table, and I attended a pretty nice private school (hillbillies like us don't trust government-provided...

    Was Noah's flood global?

It doesn't actually use the word global... it says it covered the land and all the mountains. But from whose perspective? God's or Noah's? The former is global and the latter isn't.

    Was Noah's flood global?

The flood story has a lot to do with the idea of BIRTH or re-birth. The time frames may have been adjusted to reflect the idea of gestation.

In many old manuscripts, the numbers in the genealogies are different, and add up so that he lived past the flood.
