Reader Poll - Where did the Bible come from?

There wasn't an official split at that time, but the two had already begun diverging in their doctrines. Once the Bible was translated into Latin, the western church leaned heavily on the Vulgate, while the Eastern church continued reading in Greek. And Jerome himself was highly influential...

You can become more like God via theosis/divinization and man inherited death, not sin

Agreed. Scripture doesn't say that we will become deities. It says that we will become one with God - THE God.

The Dating of the Book of Revelation

There seems to be evidence for both an early date AND a late one. That makes me think that there's multiple authorship or some editing that's happened.

Is Truth Relevant? True and False are opinions. - True or False?

Certainly there are things that are objectively true. For instance, the wavelength of blue light is 450-495 nanometers. But there are also situations that arise in life where there is no perfect answer. Usually that happens because someone has screwed things up in the lead-up to that...

What becomes of our faith if the Genesis account is NOT literal?

The Egyptians recorded their defeats as victories. One historian said, "the Pharoah always wins, but sometimes his victories get closer and closer to his capital."

What becomes of our faith if the Genesis account is NOT literal?

Yes, this one is troubling. If a couple million people died in the Sinai desert, there should be some bones and pottery there to dig up. I think the traditional location of the Exodus wanderings is wrong, and the number of people exaggerated or misinterpreted. The borders of Egypt around the...

What becomes of our faith if the Genesis account is NOT literal?

That sounds an awful lot like Paul - "all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God." I fail to see why Original Sin is necessary for this to be true. Don't we ALL sin? Yes we do. I don't think that Faith-in-Christ is the same thing as Faith-in-the-Atonement-provided-by-Christ...

What becomes of our faith if the Genesis account is NOT literal?

Used to be me. But I think I've got most of it harmonized to my own satisfaction. I don't think they do. Since this is the unorthodox forum, I hopefully won't get in trouble for sharing some things that are certainly not orthodox. There's no conflict with the New Testament on this point. It...

Did Jesus say that adultery is grounds for divorce? - Nope.

While women were not allowed to work as laborers for others, self-employment was an option, assuming you had some marketable skill. For example, Lydia dyed and sold purple cloth. Another option was to go to a temple and devote oneself. Such devotees either became "veiled women" with vows of...

Did Jesus say that adultery is grounds for divorce? - Nope.

A main doctrine of Matthew's gospel is that we should internalize the law - that is, each person should enforce it on themself. And the corollary is that we shouldn't externalize it - that is, we shouldn't enforce it against each other. Some of Jesus' best quotes in Matthew are to this end -...

Why is sexual love "eros" missing from the Bible?

My concordance says it's used twice, both in Proverbs... 7:18 ἐλθὲ καὶ ἀπολαύσωμεν φιλίας ἕως ὄρθρου δεῦρο καὶ ἐγκυλισθῶμεν ἔρωτι Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning: let us solace ourselves with loves. 30:16 ᾅδης καὶ ἔρως γυναικὸς καὶ τάρταρος καὶ γῆ οὐκ ἐμπιπλαμένη...

Did Jesus say that adultery is grounds for divorce? - Nope.

In that particular case, perhaps the husband needs to be inserted into a wood-chipper. Feet first.

Did Jesus say that adultery is grounds for divorce? - Nope.

I realize this was tongue-in-cheek, but... Under Moses' Law, the penalty for adultery (or whatever-name-we-want-to-call-it) was death. The husband had the right to drag his wife before the judge and if guilty she would be stoned to death. Within that cultural context... divorce was meant to...

    Kolasis - William Barclay

So, one thing about using Biblical Greek... sometimes proper Attic Greek turns out to be irrelevant, because the author is using improper Greek. In the Septuagint, αἰώνιος is used as a translation for the Hebrew word עוֹלָם (Olam). The New Testament authors use it the same way - so the meaning...

    Kolasis - William Barclay

I don't know that people in the 1st-century would necessarily see it this way. In extra-Biblical writings, they put forward a finite number of ages - usually 7 or 10. The final age is said to last forever - and it's the real forever - ages of ages.

    Is anyone else a Seer?

I kind of think it would get me in trouble. Prophet means exactly what you think. Prophetess seems to be used as a euphemism for something else a lot of the time.

    Is anyone else a Seer?

If you look at the Hebrew words for prophet and prophetess, they have two... very different... meanings.
